Motorla Q, HELP!

Hi,
I was thinking about buying this phone as my contract is up soon

a few questions.

1. What is the general review of this phone (for those of you that have had experience with this phone) [usability, signal, battery, etc]

2. Do I have to sign up for that expensive plan they have for PDA/Smartphone blah blah on Verizon?
[I dont need internet access or whatever that plan entails... just need this phone to be part of a regular family plan]

3. Any other comments?

thanks.

What I was told is you have to get an internet plan, because I was planning on getting a Verizon Wireless xv6700 and I asked someone on this forum and they said I have to get one so I just forgot about it, but I never called verizon to confirm it.

I have the Motorola Q but do NOT have an internet plan. I have the standard $39.99 plan.

I thought that I'd want the Q for scheduling and reminders. I am not only into the use of the Q 3 months and am waiting for the MAXX to come out. Just want a regular phone. The Q doesn't drop many calls (only about 4 or 5 so far) and has great reception for the most part but just miss the downloading of ringtones. I wish that I never got the Q because I don't use any of the features especially nto using the internet feature or e-mail. Just seems like a waste to carry the larger phone around for nothing...

Ok...

1) Phone is great, some models. Most work great with the newest firmware update from Motorola.com. Most new handsets actually come with the update installed.

Battery performance is ok on the standard battery. Extended is heavily recommended. Screen is awesome, speaker is not that bad, first batch of phones were louder and vibrated much better.

2) Data plan.

Heres the deal. Data devices have an always on connection to the evdo network and will transmit data on their own - even without browsing the web. And if you do not opt for a data plan, you will be billed at ** One and a half cent per kilobyte ** or, $0.015 / kb.

Average transmitted data per month varies heavily, no one can tell when the device connects to the netwo...

Another thing, if you take the advance data discount $100 off because you took the Unlimited Data plan $44.99, and you drop it within 3 months, they charge you $100 back as you broke the terms of that agreement.

A data plan is required to send and receive picture messages. If you use the Pay as you go KB, you will get charges for using this, if you do a National Access Block, then you cannot send or receive pix at all. So the main thing is, if you don't need a PDA and don't plan on getting a data plan, don't get this phone because you cant use it to it's potential.

I agree! If you aren't using it for the internet as I said before, total waste! Get one of the new phones that are coming out. Much better idea!

I do have to say though, that I have yet to get a data charge.

Don't buy the Q from Verizon unless you want to spend $44.99 extra a month. Go with Sprint, they only charge $15 a month.

i want to stay on verizon... as we are on a family plan and verizon is excellent in So.Cal region as well as nationally the places I've visited in the past 6 months... (San Fran, Vegas, New York, Chicago)

my main concern was if the interface (windows OS is it?) is good enough and if its PDA functions are good..

some questions:
1. Can I edit Word documents?
2. Is the screen touch screen (does it have a stylus or whatever like Treos?)

The O/S is windows mobile and its hard to compare to Treo's palm O/S. No touch screen it using navigation wheels like the Blackberry. It really comes down to personal preference. I am not a heavy user of the PDA functions so for me the Q's O/S works well.

The camera is decent, the qwerty keyboard is very nice and easy to use. I've had some issues with the voice recognition feature. I've tried adjusting the settings without any luck.

I like the Q for the most part. I don't think you will be unhappy with it.

actually the answer to number 1. just changed if you were still looking at the Q. There is a program that you can download for 29.99 that would allow you to edit word docs

It's called Documents to Go. It can be downloaded at the DataViz website. I believe it is www.dataviz.com but don't hold me to that. Just do a google search for "Documents to Go for Windows Mobile" and you should find it.
