this is insane. my friend has a cingular family plan. his contract ends this month. when i asked about renewals, he was told that there will be an $18 renewal fee for each phone on his plan. verizon and tmobile don't charge a renewal fee. cingular is charging $$$ for customers to renew a cotract and stay with them. how insane is that.

You have the option to stay on month-to-month without a fee. That $18 is an upgrade fee. We give people the same discount on an upgrade (2 year renewal) that we give on a brand new contract.

I know T-Mobile just gives you a minimal discount on a new phone with renewal (I was there for 4 years and I think I was allowed like $100 off a new phone). I have never used or worked for Verizon so I can't say what they do for renewals/upgrades though.

Anyhow, given the option of an $18 fee and a $200+ discount on a new phone every 21 months after rebates versus no fee and $100 off a new phone after four years, I'd gladly pay the upgrade fee and get the better discount.

Each carrier is different.

What I like about verizon is they give me another $100 off new customer pricing....that to me shows they appreciate me continuing service with them.

Cingular and Sprint charge you upgrade fee, but Verizon does not.

Verizon charges a processing fee depending on your market. In the Midwest it is $20 unless you are a Merits customer or are eligible for the NE2 discount. Early upgrades and standard upgrades pay the $20 when purchasing a new handset.

If you have access to the M&P's you'd see that every region has an upgrade "processing" fee. Unless the manager is making an exception for you it is only supposed to be waived if you are using a NE2 credit or your account is a Merits account. The third item is if you are receiving business discounting that states in the profile agreement to waive the upgrade fees you can get away with that too. Any other instance of it being waived is a courtesy.

Tell your friend to ask the Cingular Rep about any VIP offer, most of them waive the $18 upgrade fee. Anyone eligible for an upgrade is also eligible through their VIP tool.

They did the samething when they bought out AT&T wireless. Cingular charged AT&T customers a fee to change to a Cing plan. Now they are forcing their current customers to do the samething.
That is why hate Cingular and NEVER plan on going back with them!
