Verizon / Planned Obsolescence
They sold me a phone 2 1/2 years ago. The battery is shot, so I go to the Verizon store to buy a new one.
Verizon doesn't carry my phone anymore more so... no battery. The phone says Verizon on it, I bought it from Verizon, I pay Verizon for service on that phone they sold me, and now I get to pay for wireless service and Verizon won't provide the accessory for me to have a working phone.
I have 4 options
1. the $127 option, buy a new phone, cheapest phone $127
2. the $350 option, buy out the plan at $175/per line
3. $2400 option, sign a new contract for 2 years and get a free phone.
4. $0 option, limp along using phone only when plugged in for 2 hours, until contract expires.
They are using a str...

Which carrier do you work for BTW.

It may come as surprise to you to know that Verizon is NOT the manufacturer of your phone. So when LG, Motorola, or Samsung is no longer making the model of phone that you have then the accessories or replacement parts are no longer available. The corporate locations will have batteries on hand for 6 months to a year from the time it is no longer produced. I do my best to convince my customers at the time they get new phones to purchase an extra battery because there may not be one in a year when your original craps out. Most do not. You may still be able to find extra batteries or whatever accessories that you need from an on-line source if you look hard enough.
My phone has been disconti...

Check your battery. Does it say NiCd? If so, they don't make batteries out of Nickel and Cadmium anymore. They are all Lithium Ion batteries now.
You might want to try a battery store. I know that here in Nashville, there are stores that sell batteries and can order batteries for anything (phones, power tools, etc.)
APRX. $50 - $100. Buy a new battery. You can always check other places for a battery. Radioshack carries OUTDATED accessories for a while usually. And since most Radioshacks do not carry Verizon any longer, it may be discounted or clearanced.
Please realize though if you go to any other carrier and expect a phone for less than $200 dollars without a contract or a good prepaid plan with a cheap phone and cheap rate. You are going to be disappointed over and over again.
Good luck hope you find a good resolution to your problem.
Oh yeah, planned obselescence(sp?) is built into almost everything we buy anymore including our houses, cars, appliances, cell phones, computers, electronics... heck even clothese could count under this because styles come in favor while others go out...
To quote Forrest Gump:
$hit happens
"it happens".
just to be technical and annoying....
Ignore the rude comments.
What phone do you have? I'm sure someone here will be able to find a supplier online with a battery for less than the VZW store would have it for anyway. There are a LOT of suppliers out there with very good prices. Do a google search, or an amazon search. If you want to keep the phone, and the batteries are cheap, buy 2.
I have the Samsung 650 and bought a second battery from Samsung when I got the phone. (I bought the desk charger too). I alternate them and always have a full battery, and they last a long time when fully discharged.
Best,
Jeff

I am going to tell everyone who will listen what about Verizon's extremely poor customer service and bait and switch tactics... starting with every every forum and phone plan review on the internet.
But this really shows your maturity level, you don't want help you want to pout ๐ข and act like a baby. I have an lg 4400 which is much older then 2.5 years, I can buy a battary off ebay for five bucks. Do the funky chicken somewhere else. ๐คฃ

yeah she doesn't want help. She should, the first thing she needs help with is changing her pad.
....so cheap she recycles arguments.
1) log onto ebay, buy a batter from there for $20
2) your "$2400 option" actually gets you free phones valued between $200-$300 plus service for two years.
3) with you "buying out the contracts" at $350 means you would most likely sign up with another "$2400 option" with a different carrier
4) you can limp along with your phones until your contract expires, then cancel service for free, then protest how everyone is out to get you, then once your tired of doing that, you can retire into a small cave in colorado living the rest of your days as a hermit.

Maybe if you trying to chat my friend... Instead you decided to bash a company because they don't offer equipment that has been retired. I will tell you this, VZW offers fantastic upgrade options, a lot better than most other companies. At least they didn't tell you that you had to pay an "upgrade fee" to upgrade, or offer you no discount at all.
Which is why we consitently maintain the lowest churn percentage quarter after quarter. Polly, if you think you're being screwed by our upgrade options, go to another carrier and check theirs out- you'd blow an artery.
1. What kind of a phone is it?
2. Where have you looked.
3. Would it KILL you to take the one major piece of advice everyone's beend throwing out, LOOK ON EBAY. If there's a planned obsolesence, or whatever you said, then explain to my how 6 lg phones, 5 moto's and just about every nokia phone i've seen use the same style batteries.
Lg- 3200,3300,6100,4700,4650,5200,8100
Moto: v60(series),260,265/76,two TMO's phones, one my girlfriend has. also the 710/815 use the same type.
I mean, we gave about the same advice in march when you first posted this. Why cut and paste anyway? If you don't like the troll thing, why haven't you taken any action? Do what you said you would, close out the line, get...

To all who were trying to be helpful, my thanks.
You're welcome, and next time, instead of starting a thread titled "Verizon's Planned Obsolence," you might want to try a title like, "I need help finding a battery" ..that way you wouldn't sound so retarded and people would be glad to help you out.
I limped along for 2 months with a a phone that worked off and on due to the battery. To give an idea of the use on this phone I managed to get it working for a total of 13 minutes of calls in the last 2 months. I did not get a new battery from ebay or some other source because I knew I couldn't use that phone again with a new carrier. The phone was a LG-VX2000.
I paid for a service and was unable to use the service because Verizon couldn't provide the parts for the phone they sold me.
Verizon's customer service regarding this was poor at best. As a matter of fact they sounded like some of the people here. Your tough luck..no...

Contrary to popular belief, Verizon isn't responsible - atleast not yet by law that is. They can offer whatever they see fit for however long they see fit. And don't think it is just Verizon. EVERY cell provider is the same.
What should have happend:
You go to the store, they dont have a battery. They suggest upgrading. You say no. They say, well, you can always try the internet stores that specialize in wireless accessories - they may have the part you need. I cant promise you, but its worth a shot.
Now would that have been ok to hear?

I think its fair to say (from all perspectives), that the system of cell phone providers, isn't too forgiving.

You complaint is that you could no go to the Verizon store and buy a battery for what would be most likely 20 to 30 dollars. Come to complain that evil Verizon does not stock what you need when you need and is denying you the use of your service in some manner and that some conspiracy abounds for obsolesence.
Then, the educated masses with varying levels courtesy, adv...

For handset replacement they offer insurance. Batteries unfortunatelly are seen as "disposable" items so they won't be covered. Phones get discontinued like cars or anything else does. If the stores were to keep stock of every single phone that comes and goes then their stores wouldn't be even big enough! lol
Your best bet at this point is EBAY, be real careful and read EVERY fine print and check feedback ratings and return policies.
