Razr refuses strong extended network signal in favor of weak VZW network signal

This is most frustrating. There are certain areas near us that have very weak VZW tower signal. So weak that I can't even complete a call with my Razr, yet it stubbornly refuses to switch towers. However, powering down the phone and restarting it, you'll get 4 bars in the Extended Network with a tower just blocks away.

We have three phones; Razr, LG5200 and Nokia 2128.

Is there a setting in the phone that can force the stronger signal used, or is this something unique to specific phones? The other day I was at a soccer game. My Razr indicated it was using a VZW tower, but it wouldn't call out because the signal was too weak. I asked another person there to see what their phone was using....Extended Network and 4 bars.

What gives?...

I have a lg 8000, if there is a setting where I can force it to extended network, let me know, I would love to be able to do that.

I wish I could do the same thing with my Samsung a650. It'll hold onto the weak Verizon signal much longer than my old Motorola 120c did. On the Motorola 120c, as soon as it detected the Alltel towers at the Michigan side of the IN/MI state line (before VZW added coverage along I-94 in Michigan), the 120c would immediately switch to extended network, while my Samsung a650 would hold onto the VZW signal (again tested once before they added coverage to I-94 in Michigan around Benton Harbor & New Buffalo) for 4 - 6 miles before it would switch to an Alltel tower.

I don't think so, short of finding a way to force feed a PRL to the phone to make it grab a non vzw tower. I did however have an issue with a frua650 that the nam1 would not take a prl update, and was stuck on sprints prl. gave me a hell of a time programming it. I ended up setting the phone to nam2 which seemed to work.

I tell customers everyday that the Razor is crap. But they still want the damn thing. The reception is CRAP, the battery life is CRAP, the software is CRAP. And remember VZW did NOT make the phone!!!!

The only Motorola I ever owned was the 120c and for my brother, the V265, and we both hate Motorola. I hated the 120c because of reception issues. Otherwise the phone had a rather easy UI. My brother hated his Motorola because of reception, but wasn't as bad as the 120c, plus his Motorola completely quit working only a year into his 2 year contract. I tried talking him out of Motorola, but he listened to someone who had a Motorola with Cingular, and not from VZW. He ended up going back to his LG VX4400 'til his contract is up. He hasn't decided if he'll keep Verizon Wireless, or go with Centennial Wireless. I only hope he'll pick a better phone next time around. I tried talking him into the Samsung a650 when it was still available, b...

motorola has inproved. a small bit with the 710, but for the better part the e815, v325 have wonderful signal. the v276 is more stable than the 265, but still sucks. LG's back in form since the embarrasment of the 6100. the lg-vx8100 rocks for signal, kinda big though. the 4650 i love cause i never see it back for tech problems. the only samsung i'd recomend is the a850, but all that much.

My sister has the Samsung a850 and doesn't care for it as much. The speakerphone has been a major issue with cutting in and out alot, plus it at times has reception issues too. She's had hers replaced 3 times already. I don't know what other phone she would have considered, but she doesn't know if she'll...

Since the firmware upgrade to .04, there are no more issues for me with the phone with respect to the software and bluetooth, and I'll admit it had problems before that.

Voice clarity is excellent on the Razr. I didn't get this phone because it's "cool"; I tired quickly having over 1" of phone hanging off my belt catching everything and flipping the phone open; the recessed cover prevents that. Also, the button placement helps prevent the 'thick thumbs' feeling with most other phones, alth...

They said in their comment that VZW doesn't make the phone. As far as the comments about whether or not they work for VZW. Does it matter? Since VZW doesn't make the phone...just the network...would it matter if they gave a true impression of a particular phone? I do this all the time. Setting proper customer expectations. I would think that would be most valued! If I have someone shopping different phone models, I always advise them to come on here and read real reviews. Most come back wanting the E815 (the best VZW phone to date!)

I never tell customers phones are CRAP. I tell customers that there are better choices than the one they are making. I agree the 815 is on of th...
