Odds VZW sell pda phone w/out data plan?

What are the chances that VZW will let me by a phone without a data plan? Any rumors?

I am tired of carrying 2 devices.

I would rather not deal with the "pay as you go" plan and have to call tech support to have this feature blocked.

At the store the system requires that we put a PDA on a data plan. Either 1. pay as you go 2. 10 mb plan, or 3. unlimited data plan. My question to you and many other customers is why spend the money on a PDA if you don't plan to use the PDA to its fullest?

Well let's see.

I need all the PDA feature accept internet or wirelss email.

A Personal Digital Assistant is just that. It assists my lazy arse in getting things done. Otherwise I just forget.

It's just that getting my things done does NOT include reading email and surfing the web. Those items can wait till I get home.

This cannot be that hard to understand. People like to use PDA outside of there business.

Example, I know I have some tasks to do and setup my tasks with alarms. When the time is right my alarm goes off and I get the task done. With my cell I have to go through some crappy interface not meant for using day to day.

Thats why.

so what you mean is I have to find a salesperson who knows how to setup the blocking AND will actually sell me the phone with that setup.

I suppose I will just keep asking one of them until I find someone who has a clue.

yup, not hard we have sold a few with no data. the guy i work with uses the 6700 with no data pack, just text messaging and voice. By the way if you are savy you can set that up to use wifi if you have wireless internet at your house and that would be free. you can downolad registry editor so you can use wifi and phone functions at same time. Otherwise yes, you can just have everything blocked. If the store will not do this for you just order it from telesales and call tech support after you get it and they can walk you through blocking everything.

I suppose I will just bite the bullet and do it this way. I just heard from some folks that it was a pain in the ass to find the right tech person to add the block.

I can return the phone in 15 days so I suppose I will take the chance.

it is not that hard, and if you call in to make sure these things were blocked then they will credit you for any kb usage

jranaudo.
There's are only three data options to my knowledge. Pay as you go/10mb/unlim I have checked our internal infomanager and scrolled through two of our systems trying to find a code to block it Nothing there. If you take the Pda on the 15 day trial and decide to use the net you will be charged minutes and .015 per kb given that whatever plan you choose I suggest you stick to your original idea and just not use it. Especially since on the 15 day trail we do pro-rate minutes if you decide Vzw isn't for you. If there is indead no way to block it which I honestly don't think there Vzw will not give you credits towards your useage as any direct store you goto will comment your account that you are aware and refused a data package.

Correct. There is NO way to block data. I have been down this road. As long as you properly educate the customer...make it absolutely clear that they will be charged PER KB if they launch the web browswer...then you should be ok. I actually made up a little sheet that detailed the costs to use the web on the PDA phone and had the customer sign off on it and made a copy for them. I kept the original. That way they cannot come back with a "I didn't know" response...

As I understand it, the PDA/wireless sync or whatever constantly tries to sync with the server. This is what results in the excessive charges that some customer dont understand.

I would like to turn off/block whatever it is that causes the excessive charges so my phone does NOT connect to the web/net unless I explicity want to.

Of course I understand if I have the "pay as you go" plan and use the web I will incur large bills but that is acceptable to me as I only require this feature 2-3x per year.

I also understand that if I do not "LOGOFF" from the web then I also will incur huge costs.

All I want is a PDA phone that will not surprise me with crazy bills because of some software it has configured. If I make a mistake myself, ...

To answer your question. Wireless sync on all non blackberry pda phones is off by default. When you initially setup the pda with the computer hotsync. You will be promptee to choose to set it up or not. If you choose not to you will be fine. (dont take my word for it feel free to contact the WTDS (wireless technical data services) through VZW's customer service line. ( 18009020204 ) . If however you do set it up for woreless sync it uses 96 minutes a day attempting to pull from outlook your emails that you set it up for by default. As for your second question please refer to you opening post where you said your not going to use it. However the instruction manual/ wtds if not found in the manual will tell you how to log out of the net. IMH...

There is a feature that can be added to your account to block data. Policy wise I can only guarantee this to work in the west area, though.

In VISION the feature is called NationalAccess Block and in I2K it's 1XBLK (NationalAccess Blocked).

Customer Service should be able to add this for you but may not - a lot of them have been trained that PDA/Smartphones *MUST HAVE* a data feature...if that's the case ask to be transferred ot the DSC.

Hope this helps...
