Pressure selling...

ok, just a vent here.

I get visited by my Corp. Account Managers and its the same old tired words, time and time again...

"Sell the higher plans.
You need to hit your quota for text and data. You need to sell at least one data to every phone."

Its all about numbers. Makes me sick.

Oh and the classic... "People are leaving the store with the phones and accessories, but then they call customer service to add the features."

My rebuttal to her was, "How many of those customers are actually from my store or any other agent - or corp. store for that matter?"

She replies, "Well, I'm not too sure, but they are doing it, which means you should be getting them upfront, not loosing the commission."

So, I sit here today...

I agree. But man, the owner and I are totally against pressure sales...

In the area we live/work in, TXTing is the last thing adults want to hear. For thier kids however, we always sell TXT.

And most people around here just dont go for higher plans for:

a. They have limited income
b. Thier friends/families are "IN"

And another thing she always says...

"We are getting alot of people calling in to change their plans to the higher ones because they see their first bill and freak out." (she doesn't say freak out, she's corporate!) LOL

So I reply, "Well, most probably freak out because of "proration," which every one of my team players thoroughly go over with the customer before they sign the contract. In some cases, the cus...

or

"...have a clip board ready on the front desk, so people can sign in."

i also hate when people from verizon come into my store and try and tell me what to do. i just smile and tell them ha! have you tried selling data to 50 year old Lady's (thats my customer base) that don't want their kids having anything to make the bill higher. i don't like taking orders from people that come in my store once a month πŸ™‚

last month my store finished with 104%. if you get multiple data on each phone, free first month vcast on all vcast phones (about 50% of our sales, and we aren't even near a vcast area), plus walk up data bolt-ons, the numbers go up pretty fast. a year ago my market was lucky to see 20%, in a year we are at over 100%. depends on how you present it. when people ask about plans i throw it in as part of the price and tell them it includes 250 messages. disclose later how it splits up. if necessary demo ringback tones if you have them, it's only $1. it can be done, but you have to get in the habit of offering it like you offer anything else.

But see, throwing it in there like its part of the plan, then later defining all the details... doesnt fit well with me morally. Maybe Im just not cut for the sales side of things, but I cant do that - seems wrong. Not saying what you are doing is wrong, its just not how I want (or feel comfortable) to sell.

I offer it to every person, I dont keep it a secret. I suggest everyone pick up a plan of some sort.

How - if you dont mind me asking - do you pitch? Maybe Im hearing/reading you wrong.

Do you say "Our most popular plan is the 59.99 for 900 minutes with the $10 unlimited txt/pix package"

Thats something I would feel comfortable saying... not "Our most popular package is 59.99 with unlimited text/pix for 69.99"

typically i present it as, "most users i sell to go with our 900 minute plan with 250 txt/pix messages for $65/month. includes unlimited blah blah blah..." i start with the $5 plan to see where they are with messaging. commonly they ask what plan includes more messaging, and i just push them to the $10 plan. customers like to think they are getting something. they will be more willing to buy a plan that includes 250 messages, even though it costs $5 more, than get a plan and then add $5 to it. it's more than they were anticipating. if you set their expectations to that price ahead of time they are more willing to take it. i've never had anyone complain about it, because after they came to terms with the price plan and realize they are gettin...

Yes, it has. But some of it still sits oddly with me. I will give the plan package as you have detailed it a try for a while. Im really interested in getting people to the higher plans, but only if its needed you know?

Perfect example: My fiance has a 450 plan, and uses on average 18 minutes a month. Although, with IN, she is using about 2500 IN mins.!!!

Just goes to show - you get enough people on your network, your minutes loose value and the IN minutes go way up in value! LOL

Sales pitches. Well, with my company we get an Unlimited Period Text plan, so i go through an average of 3-5k texts a month, so this is how I explain it to people (and honestly I have only put the $10 unlimited on Camera Phones or higher) "Since I have the Unlimited V-V pix/txt package, and EVERYONE (accentuate the "everyone") I know is Verizon, instead of paying an additional $300 a month, which is 3k texts at $0.10 a peice, or higher since I got a camera phone, where pics are a Quarter a peice, I only pay $10 extra a month" if its two or more ppl on a family share plan, its even easier to sell. I explain it this way "You both have camera phones, if Customer A takes a cool pic and sends a text/pic to Customer B on the family share plan ...

Now, on the note of "Free VCast for a Month"...

Now doesnt the customer have to have it for a certain period of time for the agent to get the added comission? (not the salesperson level, the store level)

From my understanding, a feature/new act/Upgrade must stay with Verizon/keep the data feature for a minimum of 6 months for the store to recieve full credit for it. I know this is "immoral" but you must remember that 9/10 ppl who get V-Cast or some other data dfeature that they can remove later, usually forget to remove it immediately, even if you do tell them. My boss has never complained to me about my V-Cast or other data features I get customers to buy, being dropped in under 6 months, so I do not think it is as big a worry as one might think.

Also, in your Opinion WZJ, wat did you think about naming a higher price on the phone, and the "dropping the price" if they add a data feature? Just would like others opinion whether this is...

i'm not as in to that idea myself. it leads the customer to believe that you are just messing around with them, and are the kind of salesperson they don't like. people are afraid of sales people and i like to make them comfortable so they don't know i'm 'selling' them on stuff, just trying to help them out. i think saying, 'buy data, save money' will put them back on the defensive.

I'm with Mike on this one. I rather not barter with my customers. You run the risk of being the type of salesperson that particular customer hates.

Anyone selling sh*t to people that they don’t need is insanely wrong and anyone doing this is a major as*hole. A lot of older and younger people are on fixed incomes and anyone taking advantage of their lack of knowledge is being a total scumbag. The extra 10 or 20 dollars could mean a lot too many people. Anyone selling grandma a txt package and you are acting like its part of a package deal and she clearly doesn’t need it I hope you rote in hell. It’s really this much money but if you buy this I will only charge you that. That’s fu*king wrong. Yes I take this personally because dishonest people suck. What's so difficult about being honest?

nice avatar. in any case, i make sure people know what they are buying, i break it down for them. they know they are buying the text as add added feature, i just set it in their mind for a price early. the vcast, it's free! if you don't want it i'll cancel it right away or never put it on, i tell them i'm doing it before i put it through. if they are on a fixed income, they can tell me not to add it on. why is it hard to say 'no'? i don't pressure people, i try to be as relaxed and friendly as possible. as for the accessory thing. almost every customer that buys without accessories comes back to buy them later, and they pay $50 for the stuff i was giving them for $30. i'm helping them out up front.

I agree. Put simply these are the steps one "should" do when trying to sell add ons:

1.) Explain wat an add on is, and wat it will do/affect their bill.

2.) Tell them numbers, everyone understands basic math, for example, I tell ppl, hey I am XX years old, and I text average of 3k texts a month, at 10 cent a peice that would be $300, but I spend $10 and Everyone is verizon. Your TEENAGE kid is younger than me, and trust me they WILL text as much if not more than me. $10 vs $300, do the math. Its the truth, its not pushing it necesarily, and it works 95% of the time. That or they ask me to just block the text messaging. Either way I am saving them money.

3.) EXPLAIN PRORATION.

Those 3 steps, you follow them, and you sho...

Thats how I feel. But yet, Im torn between being honest and doing whats right for the particular customer, or keeping my job and suckin off the corp people (ie. giving the numbers they want to hear).

Now, I guess my frustration stems in part from the poin: if the customer cancels it after the "free trial" then whats the friggin point? OR, worse, if they dont cancel it, never use it (which I hear alot of from other agents), then I look like a duchebag in the customers eyes if they decide to do thier upgrade elsewhere.

eh..

Im so sick and tired of people saying this and that about honesty and what not.....blah blah blah " I hate dishonest people...."

When you are honest then you can hate the actions of dishonest people not the person then you would be the scumbag yourselve!

If you lie, chat, steal- speed, tell white lies
whatever your a faker.... and I have not ever met one person that truly was an honest person.

Are you completely honest? Do you do everything by the book? I mean every thing in life.. If not you cant pick and choose what you want to be honest in, in life or your a hypocrit! Life aint like mcdonalds you dont get to pick from the menu....

What the fxck crawled up your ass and died?

The whole point of this topic was to find out what are other peoples methods of selling. There ARE "crooks" out there that sell other things.

Chill out. Everyone is a sinner, happy now? πŸ™„

I just wanted to find out what could be done to please the monkeys suits and still be the best agent I can with what I have to work with. (wow, if that were any cornier, I would need floss to clean my teeth)

They are destroying their own franchise by pushing their sales people like that. Customers HATE being pressured to buy anything as everyone well knows. That's why they go home and think about what they really want or need, and then call customer service to add those features. What VZ should be doing is paying their people better up front, and not forcing them to rely on commissions to make a living.
