Home phones, is there a reason anymore?

In my area, almost everyone is dropping there home lines for cell phones. Not only is it easier to stay in contact, but you can text message, send pics, videos with some phones, and its around the same price if not cheaper all things considered (long distance fees, 411, caller id, Answering Machine, *69 etc etc). So, my question to you is, IF you still have a home phone (I have not personally for almost 4 years now) why do you still have it and wat, if any, are the advantages of having it over just having cell phones? Enquiring minds want to know. 😎

When the power goes out or cell phone towers are damaged, sometimes a landline is the only way to communicate.

hmmm, don't your home phones shut off as well when the power goes out? As for the tower in ur hood being damaged, well thats just as likely as the power going out and u not being able to use your homke phone. Actually less likely. I do not see that as a legitamate reason to have a home phone, and pay two bills for something I get better and cheaper with a cell phone alone.

When my power goes out, my cell phone doesn't shut off since it has the "wireless" thing going for it. Also the VZW towers pretty much all have backup generators so no problem there. If my battery starts to go, then I just recharge it in my vehicle, no problems!
I would have to agree that having a land-line is pointless. Some people just won't let go. I ask them why and I usually just get a reply something like 'I don't know, It just makes me feel more secure', no legitimate reason really. Especially now that E911 is being deployed.

Families with children most likely desire the added security of having a landline as well as a wireless phone. Back up is a good idea 🙂

Also you might not get good (or any) reception inside your house or apartment building and if you have a weak or dead battery during an emergency would be smart to have that back up.

Also
1)if someone in your house has a medical emergency and you dial 911 you get through very quickly and they know exactly where you are.
2)A number that you can get various unwanted calls to so your voice mail can get them. (Advertisments that are exempt from do not call)
3)The cellular(and pcs) digital systems do have failures from time to time.
4)cordless phones do work when the power goes out unless you bought one that has no back up battery in the base. I only buy those that are fail safe.
5)You have friends out of the country and want inexpensive international calling.

Good point seems to me there are plenty of good reasons a land line is worth having 🙂

If you dial 911 from any landline it will go thru. It will dispatch emergency services to the last known customer service record on the account. So if you were the last one to have the landline in your home operable they will come to your house. This little fact ruined that dumb movie Panic Room. They had that phone in the room and all they had to do is dial 911. I do agree you need a number to take garbage calls though.

Don't forget about the monitored home alarm systems that most of us have as well. Disconnecting the home phone line will make the unit worthless except for the audio alarm.

same thing with most cable & satellite boxes when you order pay per view.

And those of us that have DSL lines, kinda goes right along with having a landline.

Shortly after number portability came in a few years ago I had the bright idea to port landline to mobile. My wife thought it was a bad idea but I talked her into it. Had two mobile lines at the time with a 400 minute plan. Got third line and ported landline number to it and increased plan to 700 minutes. In theory it was going to save me a lot of money.

First phone bill was $450. I way underestimated the amount of time my wife is on the phone just B.S.ing with the other women in the neighborhood. There are still some of us who need the unlimited local calling before 9:00 PM that a landline gives you.

I haven't had a home phone for about 3 years! Luckily everyone i talk to has verizon in my area. Plus all my calls are usually long distance so when i had a landline it was running me 40-60 bucks a month plus i was paying $60 for my cells. Dropped the landline and just moved myself to the 1400 minute plan and actually did save money!. I use about 2000 in minutes, about 500 weekend minutes and about 50 daytime minutes, wife uses about 500 daytime 1000 in minutes and about 500 weekend, so it worked out for me, plus my landline was out all the time, i live in a new construction development and they kept killing the line. Just a heads up that verizon has battery back up and generators on their cell sites for the exact reason of power loss. Last ...

Well the power porblem obv isn't an issue, as we have home chargers, car chargers, extended batteries, and Verizon has back up chargers for their towers. Also, if reception is THAT bad in nyour house during an emergency, you can step outside. As for kids, thats wat the MiGo is for. Toss them on as a $9.99 add on, and just put all your families Verizon numbers on there and u can keep in touch 24-7 and never have to worry about them using a single minute. I am telling you with all the different plans, and cell phones out there, I see NO reason wat so ever to pay 2 phones bills. Security is dumb. U can\t carry your house phone 24-7, u can carry your cell, and I personally sert my #1 speed dial on 911, so in a quick emergency I just have t...

Your whole reasoning behind this "no need for a land line" is a bit superficial...yeah its is easy to sit here and say that your ideas would work to perfection and no landline would be needed. I love verizon, but I bought a condo this past summer and I live in a freakin bermuda triangle of cell reception. Its terrible in my house, and no I cant just "go outside" that does not help. I use my house phone all the time and its really cheap. I pay about $15 a month for unlimited local calls, have my landline has also allowed to save money with verizon by not have to raise minutes.

And as fas as the hassle of "paying two bills". Are you serious? It takes about 5 min a month for me to pay all of my bills. Its all online now, its easy as ...

I got bored reading the rest of this post (got part of the way through it)

I had a customer this week tell me his wife is mostly deaf and she needs a caption phone so she can read the conversation. (They were older so I'm sure text as too advanced for them) and through some organizations they are involved with due to her hearing disability they get long distance for free.

But he still wanted a cell phone emergency plan. (I work at an indirect, we don't have those)
