Is VZW trying to get rid of their AMPS and go all digital? I'm asking this because I see that some of their most recent models (released or to be released) are all digital. except the V710, so Im a bit confused.

In a word, yes. Eventually there will be no AMPS coverage anywhere. Sucks if you live in the boonies.

Cant they at least get everywhere covered with analog before they go dropping the technology? Sure I'm fine in the city or suburbs but what am I supposed to use when I'm out hunting/camping/hiking?

I guess you will have to suffer like the millions before who camped, hunted, fished, and even drove across to 7-11 without a phone! How did they do it? I know people today who don't have a phone. They call them leashes for people!

A mobile phone is a nice convience, not a necessity for many and as long as that is true prices will be reasonable.

Keep talking like that and you will be at the mercy of Providers who will charge whatever they want for mobile phone service. Cigarette smokers are paying $9 a pack in some places. This addiction to having to have a mobile phone will be the same soon.

Its too bad when a pleasant convienience becomes an addiction.

Okay, okay, go easy on me. Yes I can go out off the land like any pioneer of hundreds of years ago, but it doesnt change the fact that what I consider to be backcountry for me, is still where a few people actually live. Call me soft, call me a "city-boy" but the 'crutch' that you refer to is actually advocated by most authorities as a backup safty precaution. I cant even begin to count the number of times I've seen a hiker pulled off the mountain by a helicopter because they turned their ankle on the hike. And most times they're aided by a cell phone.

guess I'm just one of those people who naively expect technology to work everywhere. go figure....

HA.I don't know about you guys but I am one who leaves the phone home when vacationing. I do it the old fashion way. Flares, hotel and pay-phones!

I go places where there will usually be no signal anyway. Everywhere else there are plenty of ways to be reached in an emergency. Thats the key word emergency!! LOL

If I had to guess, I'd say that once they have digital equipment up on all of the old analog towers they will shut it down. If you had a tri-mode phone you would still be able to roam on other carriers outdated towers, but as you can see, tri-mode phones are becoming scarcer. Does anybody know if this trend toward shutting down AMPS is being mandated by the FCC, or are the carriers doing it to avoid maintaining an obsolete network?
