Trimode or All Digital?

Nate

May 20, 2004, 4:23 PM
I am looking to switch to Verizon on or after May 24th. There aren't any really great trimode phones out right now, but I am concerned about getting an all digital phone since I travel once a month. I live in Texas and the traveling I do is all within Texas. I am courious as to who uses an all digital phone in Texas and what are their experiences with having or not having a signal. Thanks

Tri-mode phones are capable to pick up analog ($0.69/min), as well as extended digital. I travel a fair amount throughout the western U.S., and my LG6000 (all-digital) has been quite flawless with reception/reliability. Typically customers are mis-informed as to how Tri-mode phones work. Unless you plan on using your phone for emergency calls at $0.69 per minute in desert or rural areas of the country, an all-digital phone will pick up 99% of what a tri-mode phone will. There is no difference between the two in our (red) digital coverage footprint. Hope this helps.

Correction.. in our extended network, you can acutally pickup analog without being charged, but all of roaming IS analog.. Kind of confusing, but tri-mode phones can pickup the extended coverage whereas an all-digital phone wont.

You can roam on digital. I use analog once in a while. I dont think it is Verizon's coverage, but it is not roaming since it is under a roaming agreement witht he local carrier.

My Verizon experience has been a "No Charge" one. A Analog Icon shows up with a Extended Network displayed on the Banner. However, I have been in areas where only Analog was available from another carrier, the Icon displayed Analog and the Banner said "Roaming". The Wisconsin, and Michigan Upper Peninsula border areas are a strange place 😳 .

Hell, I've gotten the black solid triangle on my t730 in parts of South Florida, but I'm not sure if that's roaming or not roaming. Anyone care to fill me in? It happens so infrequently that I rarely notice.

The Verizon Literature is quite specific! If the phone say roam, your paying $0.6? per minute, be it analog or digital. If it's "Extended Network" it could be digital and/or analog. Each phone is different, you will have to check you owner's manual. My Audiovox CDM-9500 even after 2 years every once in a while shows me something seldom if ever seen on the icon display.

It depends on who VZ has the roaming agreement with. In South Louisiana, they work with ALLTEL & Centennial, but only on analog. I roam very infrequently, and I've never been charged for using Centennial's network.

Please don't post anything if you don't know what you are talking about. First of all YOUR NOT GOING TO BE CHARGED IF YOU ARE ON THE ANALOG NETWORK. When I go out of town I mostly hit the analog area, while my sister all digital phone has no service. It depends on where you travel to the most. I have never been charged. And also your not roaming just because your on analog. If your on verizon analog network your not roaming. You are only roaming if your phone say "extended network" or "roaming". If your phone says "Roaming" (which is slim to none) you will have to pay roaming charges (Whether digital/analog) the charge varies. If your phone says "Extended Network" you wont be charged. But you may not be able to use all of your features thoug...

In response to all the input on this topic. When all else fails I read the constantly changing literature. It is precise and clear in it's defination at the moment it was printed 😲 .

Or how about I just talk on my phone when I need to...and just pay the bill at the end of the month? LOL.

Yea, That too!!!!! But like I said in a previous remark, the Michigan Upper Peninsula is a strange cellular place, and $0.6? per minute is a stiff price especially if one is talking at that rate and is not aware of it. I have operated at the fringe area of the red on the Verizon Map during the Deer Hunting Seasons up there.

Yeah well, I roam SO infrequently that it's of no consequence. Luckily.

No, not all analog is roaming and not all roaming is analog. You could roam in digital or in analog if VZW does not have a roaming agreement with that carrier in that particular area.

The one problem you're going to see with either a trimode or all digital phone is that most of Texas is on the extended network where your enhanced data functions won't work. You wont be able to use picture messaging, your voicemail message waiting indicator might not work, and if you're a data user you wo...

True. the east and south eastern part of texas is covered pretty well in [enhanced] digital coverage, the other parts arent covered so well. However, with normal digital coverage it looks pretty extensive with coverage.
