Having VZW in Extended Network?

I'm in an Alltel market area, and it seems like Verizon has a much better selection of phones, so i'm thinking about going with them when i'm out of my current contract with another carrier.

The only problem, I would mainly be in "Extended Network" which I understand is still digital service, though it's provided by Alltel.

I realize I would have to get a long distance number and couldn't get a local number, but what features would work for me (caller ID, voicemail indicator, can you use all your minutes out of VZW's network)? I use mobile web with the carrier i'm with now, would that work also?

Any help would be appreciated.

Mobile web doesn't work in extended network, but in my own experience almost everything else would work just fine. I live in the Chicago area, but my parents live in an extended network area about 100 miles to the southwest of the city, and caller id, call waiting, etc, all work just fine. Plus, you can indeed use all the minutes in your plan, including nights/weekends and in-calling. I can text message there but not picture message, although that probably varies by what carrier you're using, around there it's not Alltel, it's a local carrier. The one pitfall you may encounter is more instances of delayed billing. Since in your case VZW would be dependent on Alltel to send them your minute usage, minutes you use towards the end of a bil...

I would still think that the total customer satisfaction would not be that great in an Extended Network area. Also, the legal stuff on VZW website clearly states that the IN network doesn't apply if the banner is flashing. So in other words, in Extended network area you are rolling the dice if features will work or not. If you only travel through Extended Network areas occasionally...it isn't bad. But to live there...I wouldn't think you would end up a happy customer. And I am sure VZW doesn't want disgruntled customers...

I have a Verizon account based in the DC market that I have kept and use in Charlottesville, VA, also an extended area and home to Alltel. I use my "in" calling all the time without additional charges. The major drawback is that because it's a Washington, DC phone number, anyone called me from a Charlottesville landline will be making a long distance call. I cannot check my minutes on my phone in Charlottesville, but since I work in Waynesboro, VA where Verizon is available, I generally can do that there. True, you don't get all the bells and whistles you would with a Verizon phone in a Verizon market, but if the other stuff isn't all that crucial, which it isn't for me, it's still the best there is! Wouldn't change for all the tea in C...

you should be able to check your minutes in the extended network, at least in my part of the world, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakato, illinois, and Wisconsin..You just dial 611, like you are calling in to talk to customer service, it will give you the option to check your balance and minutes after it says welcome to verizon wireless.

And the biggest thing you will lose by being in the extended network will be the ability to send and receive pictures, and flix, VCAST, and the web, if you can live without those things, you will be ok. And as far as the M2M minutes not working when your triangle is flashing, I have never had my triangle flash in those states.

I believe that when you are on "Extended network" you are still considered "on network" but some features may not work; thus the lack of the flashing triangle. When you are "not on the network" ie, not on Verizon and not on extended network, then you are "roaming" and that is where you can expect things like M2M minutes and IN calling not to work. At least, that is how I read the desclaimers on the web site....

The brochure that I have says "National IN calling does not apply in those areas of Lousinana and Mississippi where your phone's roaming indicator flashes". In another place it says "Rates and service availability may vary when your phone's banner displays 'Extended Network.'" Clearly, they are making a distinction between "ext...

If this person signs up now, he will be on the AC2 plan, which roaming wont be an issue, he will not be able to roam. The only thing they should have to watch for is if the triangle flashes, they can use their phone, but, M2M will not apply, the night and weekend minutes still apply even if the triangle is flashing. There are very few places that the triangle will flash, and like I said, the states I operate in, I have yet to have the triangle flash.

The in-network calls may not apply in extended area because the cell towers do not belong to VZW, however, the billing system does seem to pick them up at least sometimes and apply them. Also, txt usually works but may not on some out of network towers, and voicemail is a challenge. The voicemail system is just a computer, it's not associated with your handset at all. When someone leaves a message, the system tries to send a message indicator (the tape or envelope icon & beep) to your phone. In extended network, you may not be able to receive it. It doesn't just automatically pop up when you re-enter the vzw network either, the system retries at regular intervals until it gets a signal back from your phone. The upshot? If you're depend...

I live in an extended network in southern Minnesota (roaming off of Midwest wireless). 90% of my usage is done in extended network, sometimes reaching 100%. I have never had a problem with billing, and my in calling and night and weekend minutes apply as well. I receive caller id, call waiting, voice mail indications, and can also send SMS. Like the other poster said, enhanced services will not work. My point is just to illustrate that I am in a similar situation as you may be, and have been 100% satisfied.

Has anyone been able to activate in an extended area? I have heard two things, yes (but only if they are in a dig area.. and no, not unless it is from a VZW tower. Anyone know?
