Using a CDMA phone on another network than the origin network: possible?

I own a Telus Mobility LG VX-3200, and there are good chances that I am to move in the US, and I was wondering if my Telus could be activated on Verizon's network? I have asked both providers, and none of them seem to be in a hurry to answer my question. And if it could be activated, is there anything I need to do, or do I just bring my phone at a Verizon retailer? It's not even a year old, and I would hate to be forced to buy a new phone.

Unforuntely, the answer is no your phone will not work on Vzw. Companies in the US "lock" their ph's to only work ont their network. However, the Lg Vx3300 is avaiable for $30 with a $30 mailin rebate. Basically it is nothing more than asoftware upgrade to what you are currently have.

No? I am a bit disappointed to hear it, but to tell the truth, I was expecting that it was not possible. Hopefully I have a plan B... an unlocked GSM phone. This will have to do, I guess. Thanks for answering so fast.

I think it's possible.. it all just dpeends if your current provider locks the phone so the settings can't be changed. If they let you change the SID and things like that then you should be fine.

Hmm... if I can obtain the programmation codes for my phone, could I program a Verizon number in an unused NAM?

Hmm... I'd say so. If you have a Verizon account and know the setting and have access, you could program those in to the second NAM. Of course that phones ESN would also have to be in the Verizon system for that account.

Is the phone CDMA? Is the phone GPS capable? Is the phone currently active? I can only answer one of those questions...Yes the phone is GPS....If it is CDMA and is not currently active then you may activate it on the VZW network.

Hmm... well, then, to get my ESN into the Verizon system, could my actual provider ask Verizon to add it in the system? Or could the ESN of my phone could be changed to one matching in the Verizon system?

It used to be relatively easy. Three years ago, I successfully activated Alltel equipment on Verizon service. All I had to do was request an ESN change, and dial *228.

But I could never be certain that the roaming indicators were working right. This was on the earlier version of America's Choice, when you could get billed for roaming if you were on the wrong network. There were three possibilities:

(1) VZW network = GOOD

(2) Extended network = roaming at no extra charge

(2) Roaming = 69 cents per minute

Even with the right manual programming, and even with a successful *228, the internal firmware designed for Alltel couldn't seem to interact properly with Verizon's PRL. So I never knew for sure if I was on the Extended Network...

The big beef we constantly read about is how VZW "locks" or "cripples" their phones, preventing us from choosing other equipment, and preventing the equipment they offer from performing certain functions, like transferring your own photos to your computer through a cable or through Bluetooth. It is perceived as corporate greed, as a way of forcing us to use Get It Now or other VZW services.

About a year ago or so, I read a Consumer Reports article that said approximately this:

GSM service tends to be more "phone-centric," with services and functions residing in the equipment; CDMA service tends to be more "network-centric," with services and functions residing on the network instead of the phone.

This is what it's really all ...

You cannot activate any other cdma phone on Vzw no matter what you believe! If you work in a retail location walk to your nearest sprint store borrow a phone log onto eroes run credit blah, blah when it asks you to enter the Esn put in the esn off the sprint phone you will get an error message. There is no way around the error message. So Shadow not matter any of these people tell you I have tried it it will not work!

I work at a corporate retail VZW store and have personally activated Alltel, and Sprint phones for customers. I assure you, it does work in the retail channel.

CDMA cannot be unlocked, because they are not "locked" in the first place. They simply have the software of the carrier that they were originally intended for installed on them. Please learn what you are talking about before we end up with those annoying "How do I unlock my CDMA phones?" threads again.

No, I am talking to the right person. You are the one that was talking about unlocking a CDMA phone. The Original Post was simply asking whether a CDMA phone can be used on all carriers, or just the ones they are released for.

You are the one that said "That what i thought, just take it too verizon to unlock it for him, or just send it to an eabay company and they'll unlock it for you too. Im pretty it will work, but than again i have gsm not cdma. i know cdma is a little harder to unlock though."

CDMA phones cannot be unlocked. PERIOD!!!! However, they can be used on different carriers if the software is set u...

perhaps YOU should become more informed as well, you hint that it can work if the software is set up so, I have UNLOCKED a CDMA 6255 to use on VZW. yes UNLOCKED, when you access programming and it asks for a lock code, you enter it, it is then UNLOCKED!, you then have to update the PRL, on VZW phones the subsidy LOCK code has to be set to a default one from maker, ie. with nokia 12345 or motorola 000000

Beleive it or not, it's been two weeks since I've written to *BOTH* Verizon *and* Telus to try to get an answer from them about getting my phone activated on Verizon's. Could you beleive NONE of the two even took the few minutes needed to answer me?! Sadly, this has MUCH lowered the very positive opinion I had on Verizon *and* Telus. *Sigh* at least the people in here are helpful enough to take the time to answer me. I *really* appreciate it.

If you know how to program the phone, it can work. As to wheter Verizon only allows their own ESN's, that's up to them. However, your phone can be manually programmed with the correct information to function on Verizon.

Well, I was told by a Verizon employee here on the boards that if I get the ESN of the phone changed to one in Verizon's system, it should work. It would be nice if they would just take the few minutes needed to answer me, but seems they don't really care, I guess.

Yeah, they're horrible. Oh wait, I tried to help him and I sell Cingular.

I guess you could reprogram your phone with a Verizon ESN, I've never had to manually program an LG phone before as I've only worked with TDMA. I'll look into finding those programming codes, so then all you'd need is an old ESN off a broken down phone. Hopefully the LG programming supports changing your ESN.

What we have done in the past is have the phone taken to a corporate store and flashed to the Verizon software and then have it activated on the service. Provided it can be flashed can you have the unlock code. People switch service enough around here that it works for us well!!

well, I've called Telus to get a hold of the programmation code, but they have proven most... uncooperative. Frustrating. I've specifically told them I wanted to go with Verizon, which is their official roaming partner.

So basically, to sum it up:
First, get the ESN changed to one in Verizon's system. Second, get the firmware updated to Verizon's. Third, program the phone. It sounds quite do-able.

Oh, ralph, ironic that you mention Cingular. They were my second choice if switching with Verizon was not possible. 🙂

If you are really adamant about it send it to LG to have the software re-installed, i have sent phones to motorola on several occasions and too many times the phone comes back with alltel software, data services and all but if its just a 3200 i don't see the urgency.
