upgrade: by store, online, or by phone?

I'm hoping to upgrade my phone this week and would love some help making a decision.

My wife and I currently have a separate accounts with Verizon. I'd like to switch both of us to a family plan and upgrade both of our phones. My wife doesn't care what kind of phone she gets and I'm leaning towards the Treo.

I'm wondering if there are any advantages/disadvantages to buying online, by phone, or in store.

I'm hoping to switch this week, so any advise would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Phones tend to have a better deal online, so if you are looking to merge your accounts I would call CS. They send the new phones out quickly and it is cheaper most of the time. Call your local store and compare final prices.

Better deal or cheaper price? How about a deal with a local independant agent who pays LOCAL taxes and supports the local economy, oh yeah, and they have a place to walk in and get help with questions and the such. With a Treo I would definitely go through a place where you can walk in and get help.

But then again, lets just give all business to the web because it is "cheaper" and then wonder where the local business (along with local jobs and tax revenue) are going.

I have no problem with a local dealer. There is just one thing you need to be careful on with a local dealer. A lot of local dealers charge their own ETF if you shut off your service early, it is usually only 6 months or so, but, why be responsible for 2 ETF's when you don't have to be. If your local dealer don't require that, then fine. And, no, I don't work for verizon, I am a customer, I don't push either way.

On the best place to get your phone, there isn't much difference, web is usually cheaper because you get the rebate up front. Going to a store, corporate, or authorized agent, you get the phone right away. If you call in, you get the same prices as store. Another thing by going to the store, you save on shipping. Sometime...

The reason some dealers charge their own ETF is because of the way they are set up to sell the customer a phone. Verizon Wireless pays the dealer a commission to sell a phone. The dealer buys the phone at a cost from Verizon Wireless. This cost is considerably higher then what the consumer pays. In other words, lets use abstract numbers. Lets say a dealer buys a phone from Verizon Wireless for 100 dollars. That dealer gets paid 150 dollars to sell you that line of service. The dealer provides you the phone. So the dealer just made 50.00 or 150.00 commission + what the customer pays for the phone (in this case zero) minus the amount the equipment cost the dealer. 150 + 0 - 100 equals 50.00

Now lets say you the customer disconnec...

I would definitely suggest going to the web...you'll notice that online there are instant rebates on the phones and if you use MyAccount your renewal discount will already be applied to the pricing of the phones. I wouldn't try CS...I've heard that it takes forever and if you have a New Every Two discount you may get charged 50.00 if the phone you want has a rebate. Then again, I'm biased...I purchased my last phone online and it was totally hassle free. And I hate calling into CS. 🙂

I would definitely recommend people to start buying EVERYTHING online. Then we would lose jobs, storefronts, local tax money, zero customer service, etc. BUT THE PRODUCT YOU BUY WOULD BE CHEAP!!! I totally recommend buying online!
