Help with Caller ID on Verizon

Help Please

Jul 16, 2005, 8:21 PM
I'm new to this forum, so I hope you can help (sent original request as a reply - sorry, so I'm resending).

I'm a new Verizon customer with 4 phones in a family share plan. 3 numbers ported over from Cingular and 1 number is new. All 4 numbers display my name (Master Account Holder) when calling a land line with Caller ID. I've spent 2 days with Verizon telling me it can/can't be done but no success yet. I can't believe this is such a unique request that it's not possible. I simply want each individual phone to display the user name (which is in the system) when they call a land line. Can anyone provide help/guidance?! Thanks in advance!

wow, thats cool that your name pops up, when I call a land line all it shows is the city and state I am calling from, even when I am local

I think that varies based on telephone company and cities/states. Some areas, it displays my number and "Unknown" while others it shows the number/name (but only Master Account Name) which doesn't help my husband when calling his clients!

You could always have him dial *67 if he doesnt want your name coming up on the caller ID

From the experience i've had in the past as a LNP rep, most features such as the name showing is coming from Sprint since they are the original owner of the phone number. Verizon simply is providing you with your service but since showing your name on caller ID is a Sprint feature, it won't go away too soon unless Sprint turns it off in their systems.

Verizon Wireless only displays the state and city that your number originates from. This will happen on numbers in which Verizon has purchased the license.

There is not a way for us to turn that off if you ported in to us.

Sorry...if you find something else out..let us know. ☚ī¸

Thank you for your reply. I will try contacting Cingular to see if I can change it there, but understand it may be too late since the number was already ported over. I'm shocked that it today's world of technology, there has not been a software change to add a field for "Caller ID" that can be filled in and then pointed to for identification. Seems the first one of the cell companies that can provide this should market the heck out of it because I can't believe I'm the first frustrated user. Thanks again.

Its probably a security issue about changing the Caller ID, You wouldnt want people being able to change their own name on it to read "Police Departmant" or "FBI" and scamming people out of money, not that you would use it for this purpose but there definatly would be some people who would try to dod this.

vzworacle is correct -

Only the city/state where the phone number was issued from displays on a CID device when calling from a Verizon phone. Personally I like it that way, I really don't like having my name show up on CID.

Thus a number such as:

402-681-xxxx will show Omaha, NE on the name line

or

712-310-xxxx will show Council Bluffs, IA on the name line

NAMPA will not allow individuals to change the name that appears with their phone number for the very reason that someone else stated here and that is security. I have heard of people hacking somehow into the system though and being able to send a "false" signal to a CID box that doesn't show their correct and true account identity.

Too my knowledge, this cannot be done. Your name should not even be showing.

I am with Alltel and my name shows up. I have been told that I can go to the store and have the name of the other person on my account added to show on her number. Haven't tried it yet, but it sounds like it should just be a system issue. Maybe if it was set up to be changed by a store or CS rep, then it would prevent things like FBI or Police being added. But like Echternacht said, It sounds simple, but we're not the ones adding adding it to the system.

By the sounds of it, everyone else here's hit the point:

1). Verizon doesn't display the Billing Name on a whole, only City and State.

2). Port-Ins mean that Cingular still controls the number, but it's overlaid in the network on your HLR information--it's the diable number and it triggers a Verizon routing number, not a Cingular IMSI.

3). However, if your information appears on the caller id, and that's from Cingular's databases, then there's nothing Cing can do: They're limitted to the Billing name. Which, I think is more important: The one responsible should pop up.

The request sounds simple, but getting it done... Isn't.

Wouldn't you be able to call Cing and change the names associated with your closed account? Even though they aren't active on their network, the name would clearly be coming from their billing system. Wouldn't changing the information with Cing be reflected on the Verizon phones?

Would we honor a request like that from someone who ported out? Hell no. Neither would Cingular.

It would be faster to just verify the account and change the name associated with the phone number though. Otherwise you'll have a stupid 20 minute argument about it, they'll ask for a sup....

Come on now, Vat, where would we be without stupid 20 minute arguments that get escalated to sup's?!

IT'S MY NAME ON THE ACCOUNT! I NEVER PUT A PASSWORD ON MY ACCOUNT! CANCEL MY SERVICE IF YOU WON'T LET ME HAVE ACCESS! I'M GOING TO CINGULAR!

I'm sorry to hear you wish to terminate service. Unfortunately without verifying the account, you can't cancel service. To remove the password from your account, please go to the nearest store with picture ID and they can remove it for you there.

I'VE BEEN A CUSTOMER FOR 30 YEARS! PUT THE PRESIDENT OF THE COMPANY ON THE PHONE NOW! I'M TAKING YOU TO COURT, YOU'LL WISH YOU NEVER MESSED WITH ME!

Fabulous stuff. My favorite argument is with unauthorized contacts.

WELL I PAY THE BILL, I HANDLE EVERYTHING ON THIS ACCOUNT.

Well, clearly you don't, or it would be in your name, now wouldn't it? Now run along and get your sugar daddy to call in, kay?

🙂

"I suppose you could be the one mailing in the check, but as far as our records show, it could be me paying your bill. If you'd like any information pertaining to this account, I'll need to talk to the BRP."

Is it bad that when the account comes up and there's only a man's name, I hope to hear a woman on the line? Or the other way? I love that conversation too. It's even better when they ask for a sup. "Look you dumb hoe, they're not going to break the rules for you either so quit calling."
