Why is Verizon not allowing BlackBerry Protect to work on the BlackBerry 150 MB data plan? This program allows you to set it to upload only when it's on Wi-Fi, so what is the point? Is it to convince people to go to the unlimited data plan when there is otherwise no reason to do so?
...
How can they stop you from using it? Isn't it just an app?
...
A dialog box appears when you try to do the first upload saying that "Ycalling plan does not support BlackBerry Protect. Contact your carrier", or something to that effect.
...
Can you not download it on a computer and then install it through Desktop Manager?
...
It sounds like he is getting an error message after the app installed, so it isn't a matter of getting the app on the device, but getting the app to function properly?
...
It's not an error message. Verizon has confirmed to others that BlackBerry Protect will not work with the 150 MB data plan.
...

I would say they are forcing you to an Unlimited data plan to take advantage of this feature. They never wanted to offer the 150 MB plan in the first place. Less revenue and more headaches...no surprise.
...
I contacted Verizon myself and was told that Verizon has no such restriction on the program. Verizon couldn't figure out why this message appeared on the program and transferred me to BlackBerry. I've been through two people at BlackBerry so far and they can't figure it out either. If they eventually do, I'll post what they say.

It is in a beta phase, so report the issue and hopefully they resolve it on release.

Just got off the phone w/VZW tech support and they told me users need to have unlimited data to use BB Protect because the app constantly pulls data. They also said told me unlimited data is going away in the next few months and new plans will replace it - old news. I said to the rep if all of the above is accurate then in a few months no VZW customer will be able to use BB Protect. She more or less said, "uh, yeah". I'll stick with Lookout Mobile Security; I've used it for months and it works well.
Does anyone know if other carriers are allowing the app to run on capped data plans?
...
I agree. So Verizon you *Bleeping* *Bleeps* why are you taking it away?
Okay. Better now.

Apparently they reached the one customer service rep who knows everything that hasn't been decided on or happened yet.
I'd take the word of a psychic before someone who called someone else who thinks they know something.
...
Taking the word of a psychic is the same thing as reading some, most, of the posts here. How many times was the VZ iPhone coming out next week, next month, never going to happen prediction made in the forum?
...

About once a week.
Some are still predicting it, even though its already out.
...
Dude, did you hear that we're getting the iPhone5 sometime in june? Its going to be LTE, WiMax AND HSPA+. And it'll make your breakfast in the morning. Its speciality is Eggs Benedict
...
I'm not sure you're right. The Verizon people I talked to even put me on the unlimited plan for a while and I had the same problem as I did when on the 150 MB plan. Both Verizon and BlackBerry told me that it should work on either plan. Additionally, the App allows you to not upload except when you're on Wi-Fi, so whether you're on the unlimited data plan or not should make no difference. In any event BlackBerry is checking further and promised to get back to me.
...
So once again the answer depends on the rep who answers the phone. I hope your info is more accurate than the info I got and the app does work with the no longer available 150 MB plan. It seems the 150 plan ended on Jan. 31st in anticipation of new tiered data plans.
...
"It seems the 150 plan ended on Jan. 31st in anticipation of..."
...the iphone.
...
Here's an idea, try pushing your service books again. Also, do you have access to other BIS services? Or are those not working for you?
...
Everything else works. Someone from BlackBerry got back to me and left a message that said that the problem is that Verizon's "provisioning won't allow it to work." I have to get back to BlackBerry, which promised to get Verizon on the line to change its "provisioning." Frankly, I don't know what this means.
...
I talked again with BlackBerry and Verizon. This time they told me that the problem is that I'm on the America's Choice calling plan and that if I switch to the Nationwide plan that BlackBerry Protect will work. I haven't tried it yet. They both agreed that whether I'm on the 150 MB plan or the unlimited data plan is irrelevent for this purpose.

I guess that makes some sense. A six year old price plan wouldn't have been configured for today's uses.

Am Choice is a waste on a smartphone. On a dumb phone all your data sessions would use air time. The smart surfer just kills them during off peak time.
...
Verizon HATES America's Choice plans. When I worked there they tried to con us into getting off of it. Then they tried to bribe us. Then they threatened us. Finally, one day I woke up and my plan had been changed.
