Retailers commonly use placeholder prices until they know the actual price of a device, or can publicly state the price of the device.
What do you think would happen if they say "$500" and it ends up being "$800?" It would cause a problem. SO, you go high and deliver low - call the price "$1200," then come out with "$800." Far fewer customer service issues.

I'd prefer they keep their "mouths" shut until the device's official price and availability are announced. But, I know Best Buy likes to get the drop on the carriers, so they go through this little pre-order / pre-announce game to get the upper hand. They could easily keep the device unpublished online (harder for print, if they were expecting an earlier launch), but instead they use it as an opportunity to drive sales. I guess I can't blame them, but I can still be critical.
I have to say... the Xoom looks freaking awesome. If the supposed pricing ($799) were more palatable, I'd be considering it.
