BOLD Issues

DoubleHelix

Sep 9, 2010, 7:38 PM
My brand new BOLD has a radio issue where the signal jumps from 80 dBm (best) to 115 dBm instantly (no signal).
When it does that, I cannot use the phone.

I read somewhere that this is and has been a problem with some Tours and now Bolds.

Is this something I can Fru it for? Gosh I hat to do a FRU but I guess because the phone is so new, I might possibly get a new replacement as opposed to a re-furb?

Any thoughts?

How new? If it is less than 30 days you would get a new one out of box. If not...yeah...CLNR (FRU). No way I would be walking around with a phone which works when IT feels like it paying Verizon's rates so I say definitely have the exchange it.

60 days (ugh).....
If I am on my wife's VZ employee plan can I take it to a store other than hers to get it replaced? Or do I have to do it with the dreaded employee accounts?

Anyone can FRU out a phone if they have it in stock. Not all retail stores have advanced device CLNRs (or at least not when I worked there).

How do you like the phone otherwise? Did you use the tour? Any major differences?

Sorry for the sidebar, but I may be picking one up next week and was curious to what people are thinking about that device

Chris,

I have a Bold and I really like it. This is my 5th BlackBerry in the last 8 plus years and it does everything I need it to do, and more. Audio quality is excellent, signal strength excellent, messaging - it's a BlackBerry, do I need to say more? No one does messaging better than BlackBerry, in my opinion. The battery life is fine; I get 2 days from a charge and I'm a heavy user. I use my phone to talk, send/receive email, BBM, contacts and calendar. I don't use it as a personal entertainment center. If you're more of a business user, it's a no brainer. If you're looking for better media handling, then an Android device is going to work better for you.

I agree completely with what you said. I use my BlackBerry Bold in exactly the same way that you describe and I cannot ask for more. It's a wonderful device.

awesome, thanks for the info.

I have been a pretty loyal BB user. But recently used a droid X for about a month and really enjoyed it. They both do some things really well, i guess it just depends on how you use your phone.

Chris, what don't you like about the Droid X? Just curious as to why you'd go back to BB.

I sold my droid X to a buddy cause he needed one for work. His company uses google services for enterprise.

Heres what I like better about blackberry vs Android...

1. I can get almost 24 hours on a single charge

2. Contact management is easier to manage and more consistent.

3. I like the calendar options better in BB

4. Most of the Apps I actually use I can get on BB

5. Keyboard obviously, haha.

6. Louder ringers and alerts. I also like the alert profiles on Blackberry.

I really like Android, but I am sick of every company putting their spin on a good operating system. Sense is the only Android skin worth a damn. Im waiting for Android to mature a little bit and I want my next contract phone to be LTE. Until t...

Thanks for the reply. I have an Eris that my son really wants, and I am seriously considering the Bold or Curve2 for a lot of the reasons you mention. I am tired of charging the phone every 5 hours. I am tired of the virtual keypad (even though good, sometimes just infuriating). I don't use a lot of the apps I have on it, although I guess they are nice. I DO love Sense and the calendar is fine on the Eris. I was looking at the Droid 2 but I'm even looking at just going back to a "hello?" phone. Now if only Verizon had a $15 data plan like AT&T is now advertising...

Other than the issues with this particular unit, the phone is probably one of the best Blackberries I have owned. The sound quality alone is superb and the thing is solid unlike the Curve II.
A close friend had a Tour and his only complaint was the trackball issue.
This phone is just as good, if not better than the Tour and it has twice the memory so it will be able to run OS 6 when Verizon approves it.
I'm not sure I would ever get an Android since the Blackberry is much mor...

So- you would prefer a new, non-working phone to a functioning refurbished phone?

If so, just keep the one you have.

That is exactly the argument I used with a friend who advised my not to get it replaced. So it is a clean shiny paperweight? 🙂

Check with your local store. Some stores are different. Some will replace employee phones, some will not. You may get a rep who will do it, but you will have to do the esn change yourself. If they dont, then you will have to call employee accounts.

Nice.

You majored in smart*Bleep* didn't you? At the end of the day you are correct, however. I went through eleven Silver Qs before they FINALLY placed me into a Black one. I never had another issue an it still works. A nice backup to my XV6900.

No, I majored in Electrical Engineering and took a minor in Smart@$$ (with an emphasis in cynicism).

I had my wife call employee accounts and add me to the account as an authorized user.

Then I called them and described the problem to them and they shipped a replacement today to arrive tomorrow.

I will report on the radio performance as soon as I get it.

New BOLD FRU received and is perfect! Signal never varies anymore, the difference is amazing.

As an added bonus, the trackpad and keypad work better also. Just a better build so I made a good move by exchanging it.

Agreed. It is better to FRU, FRU, FRU until they get it right than put up with a garbage phone for which you are paying for service you cannot use.
