With the exception of the iphone (which arguably has first party bloatware) EVERY cellphone that you buy from a carrier comes loaded with bloatware. This isn't some new phenominon.

You have the EnV2, right?

Your phone comes with VZ Navigator, backup assistant, preloaded shortcuts to verizon's chosen ringtone sites.

Blackberries have Bing, Slacker, and several other apps preloaded on their devices. as do winmo and palm phones.

Again, this is nothing new.. so why are people suddenly writing about it?

I think a lot of it too, is that people want some of those services but have no idea how to get them. So, by preloading it onto the device they might be able to try it out. My only gripe is that it is silly to not have the ability to delete an app.

Oh I agree it's silly, and I'm all for removing it. But it's kinda pointless for people to make this huge deal over what's essentially nothing.

Kinda like people freaking out about google remote wiping 2 apps from android phones. This has been standard in android since the marketplace launched, it's in their terms and conditions. Heck, THEY were the ones that broke the story about them using the feature before anyone else knew about it.

And suddenly all these blogs are going on about how google is "becoming closed" or how they're somehow the only ones with this feature.

Which is a lie. iOS has this feature as well. The VERY important distinction is that Google announced theirs up front. Someone else found out about the capabil...

Both Verizon & Sprint have their own tabs on their own Android smartphones in the market. I like that approach. If there's an app the carrier offers, and I *want* it, I can just tap on the Verizon tab in the market, and d/l it.

Oh Gawd 'ya; every smartphone has this. I don't know about Androids but on BB's the only thing you can do is to delete the service books to make it disappear and even then they come back as soon as you reboot.

You are correct Menno. I have two enV2's.

However, you are also wrong. They did not come with VZ Navigator, Backup Assistant, or preloaded shortcuts of any kind.

They came with Browse & Download and Get It Now menu choices that could have been used to download applications. I chose to download only Backup Assistant. There was absolutely no bloatware/crapware.

The clear difference between the enV2 and Verizon's latest Android offerings is that you were not previously forced to endure "always-on", battery-draining, unwanted and unnecessary applications that cannot be uninstalled without rooting.

the apps are NOT "always on" so they don't drain battery.

Unless you're using an app actively, it's not on.

You can't go off of what's in the task killer because that's just showing save states.

And the ENV2 does have a preloaded shortcut for VZnav. I had one.
