The Market Is Saturated....

According to the US Census, the current population in the United States is 309, 121, 117 (for all intents and purposes we'll simply say 309.1 million people).

Here's how many people are with the cell phone companies (in millions):
VERIZON = 92.8
AT&T = 87
T-MOBILE = 35
SPRINT = 50
CRICKET = 4.5
US CELLULAR = 6.1
BOOST = 6
VIRGIN = Unknown

If you add all the subscribers, you get approximately 281.4 million. 309.1 minus 281.4 equals 27.7 million US residents who do not currently own a cell phone. Now keep in mind these figures do not account for goverment assist programs, TracPhone, etc. but you get a pretty good idea of why net adds are down for Verizon Wireless (and not that great for AT&T either).

The industry considered 60% of population as saturated, which happened a few years ago.

27.7/309.1 == about 9%

I think it's safe to presume that 9% of our population cold be either under 8 years old and unable to care for a cell phone or over 90 years old and have absolutely no need for one.

Growth in the industry players is going to come from only a few sources:

A) Offering better service quality, device selection or pricing to steal customers from competitors.

B) Adding depth through additional connections per subscriber- getting someone to buy a phone and a USB modem, etc.

C) Adding tangible value to the services already offered so that customers are willing to pay more when they get more. I think this is where tiered data pricing will start to shine.
