Not unheard of - all one needs to do is log back into their gmail and re-sync and all should be well again... unless they're not using that capability... yeah, I had one of those people recently.

This happened to my niece when she did the latest update to the Storm 1. Her brother and mother updated before she did and had no problem. Was there an easy fix for the storm? Too late now as she manually put everyone back in, just wondering.
