it's a little more complicated than that (prorated amounts, etc) but yeah. This is why Verizon (and I'm assuming other carriers) are changing the way ETF's work.
Companies were given two choices:
1) increase etfs, negatively impacting less than 5% of their consumer base. (look at their churn)
2) decrease the amount they subsidize the phones, negatively impacting 20%+ of their customer base (smartphone people, or people considering smartphones).

I've used upgrades in this manner in the past actually. Upgraded to the Dare, sold it on Ebay and put my 8300 back on the line.

That would be assuming you got your Blackberry for free at the time. Most of the time smartphones aren't free. The storm is at least $50 at Verizon. Some are $150 and $180 depending on the model, so you have to add what you paid for the phone up front in addition to the $175 when figuring in your profit margin.

Actually the Storm 2 is $180, plus the $175 ETF. If you sold it on ebay for $450 you would only make $95. Still not bad, but may not be worth all the hassle.

do it on 4 lines: net almost 400 dollars.
That was what was hurting the bottom line. (and remember, Blackberry's are bogo)
