Verizon in Charlottesville in May!

Just got the word this week that the Alltel folks here are going in for Verizon training later this month, with the switchover taking place the end of next month.

Now, here's a strange...

What is the fascination of buying a dummy phone if you're not selling handsets and need something for a display? At the moment, no less than 8 Samsung Renown dummies are being sold on eBay. I sure wish someone would put up a new REAL Renown for sale. I'd like to buy one for a little less than full retail.

To the average consumer this would seem weird or strange. The reason that there is dummy phones on ebay is that these are hard to come by for dealers. Not only that they are not free. The dealers have to buy these so that they have something to show customers. I have paid as much as $80 for a high end dummy phone, because a real one might cost as much as $500+. Also you may want to have more than one dummy phone model per store and when you have multiple stores that gets costly. The reason that you may not see any used on there yet is that that model phone may have not been out long enough to have many used ones turning over yet.

I think the Renown is a poor quality phone.

You are the first person I have spoken with who feels the Renown is not a good handset. Would you mind telling me what it is about it you don't like?

Thanks.

I really like the phone, and don't think it is made bad. For one, I work for Verizon and should know this, but many people have diffrent thoughts. For one, I am not a fan of Samsungs, I like LGs. The Omina is a really good PDA phone, but it is a Smart phone in which I think Samsung does better in than dumb phones.

The thing that impressed me the most about the Samsung Renown is how solid it felt. I've been using a Moto RAZR V3m for the last couple of years on Alltel, and for my purposes, it worked fine. Well, now, Verizon will be here in C'ville within the next couple of months, and the Samsung is the only phone Verizon has that is NOT a Smartphone and has GSM capability, quad-band, no less. I'm generally partial to Nokias and Motorolas, but I'm not impressed with what I see coming out of Nokia these days for CDMA, and the only Moto non-smart handset with GSM capability is the Z6c World Edition, which is a slider (not crazy about sliders) and only dual band GSM. I've never owned a Samsung before, but many of my friends have, and they seem to be pr...

The new Nokia from Verizon is pretty awesome.

That's the Intrigue, right?

Did Nokia build it, or was it farmed out to another manufacturer?

No, Nokia built it. Auctually, Nokia cancled all contracts with other phone makers to make there phones. Like, Panatch or w/e made phones under Nokia for Verizon, not anymore. Nokia 6205 and Intrigue are made by Nokia it self.

Recent development? I remember hearing not that long ago that Nokia was going to stop building CDMA handsets altogether and just concentrate on GSM, at which they excel. I hope their CDMA knowledge is better than it used to be. Their phones are still the most user-friendly in the business, which was the attraction I had with them.

They did, and other phones makers would make CDMA phones under the Nokia name, but Nokia just started making CDMA phones again and cancled contracts with others who were making phones under the Nokia name.

I spoke with our Nokia rep the other day.

Nokia stopped outsourcing CDMA production only for Verizon. They still outsource for other CDMA carriers worldwide (not just U.S. CDMA).

Also, they have no intention on making CDMA versions of their GSM phones. They're simply going to wait for LTE to take hold and sell N-series and E-series type phones to LTE carriers, including Verizon.

Very nice! So Verizon is liable to get stuck with some dogs until LTE kicks in? No, maybe that isn't completely fair. I'm hearing good things about the Intrigue. The last phone Nokia made for Verizon before they outsourced actually wasn't too bad of a phone, either. Still, their GSM product has the CDMA product, on balance, smoked, n'est pas? It's not that I need the bells and whistles that 4G will genuinely help, but really, Nok's GSM product really is terrific, and as long as the CDMA footprint beats the GSM footprint here in the US of A, you can bet your bottom dollar I'm stickin' with VZW!

Not dogs, really, just exclusive phones designed with minimal innovation until LTE picks up the slack.

Always keep in mind that the majority of Nokia's production world-wide is still minimal design phones. Their higher-end series are a large portion of their world-wide selection, but by no means the majority of it. Nokia still makes a lot of money on low to medium featured phones in the world market.

I have no idea where you heard that, because Nokia it self makes our Intrigue.

I have no idea where you heard me say the Intrigue is not made my Nokia, because I didn't say a single thing about the Intrigue.

I said that the Nokia rep told me that they outsource all CDMA production around the world to companies (like Pantec) EXCEPT for Verizon. Nokia makes Verizon CDMA in-house, just for Verizon, and for no one else. Again, Nokia makes CDMA phones for Verizon. Nokia outsources CDMA phones for carriers that are NOT Verizon. That's what I said previously, though in fewer words.
