Blackberry Niagara?

Any release date for this phone? My Verizon contract is up and I'm thinking of switching to ATT for a bold.

I love Verizon's reception, just tired of their sub par crippled phones like the Storm..

I'm praying this phone will have the same 624MHz CPU as the Bold and have WIFI!!!!!

Per PhoneArena.com, it'll be in May. If you go to their website, click on Verizon phones, then "upcoming" phones, you'll see the Niagara there. Their also coming out with a BB Pearl Flip like T-Mobile has, though I like the Niagara better due to better camera and world roaming/GSM. Check it out! 🙂

May seems to be the date, I heard the phone is in final production and should begin testing soon. Once testing begins, im sure some spy shots will leak out on one of the blogs.

The whole cripple argument is getting old, and I dont know any way the storm is "crippled". Wifi is only widely used in GSM due to the poor 3G coverage in many areas. With verizon's Rev A coverage wifi should be a non issue.

The bold on att is sweet, but I am very interested to see what RIM cooks up for the CDMA bold.

My thoughts exactly.

The crippled phone arguments are so 2004.

WiFi is really only functional as a backup system than a primary system, but when a phone wasn't designed for WiFi, is there really a crippling at work? Or maybe it was just designed that way because the WiFi would be superfluous and unnecessary?

I've had every WiFi phone Verizon offered since 2004, and not a single one of them was very functional over WiFi. I could be sitting anywhere near my WiFi router and get speeds slower than EVDO.

I wish Verizon would put WiFi in every smart phone (particularly the world editions) just to put a stop to the crippled arguement. I know the phones don't need them but it would save a headache and overcome objections.

Look for more phones to come with WiFi. even though it's not required, so many people are complaining about it that more phones will start coming with it.

There should be more smart phones period coming from verizon. They are quickly growing in popularity as more people judge the connectivity to be a necessity.

That, and with LTE, there will be more with it by default since the models will be shared across carriers.

Verizon does not have the option to tell the phone maker to put WiFi on every phone.

It's the phone MAKER who makes that choice.

Guess what? If Verizon requests Wi-Fi...RIM will give them Wi-Fi. Verizon is ordering these handsets so of course whatever they want in the handset they will get.

Will there be a new Pearl released, with the same bar form factor, just smaller with new 4.7 software, and maybe 3.2 MP camera? Oh, please!! 🤤

Here we go with another "my contract is up and I am thinking of switching" or the whole "crippled phone" statement. If you really wanted to switch to get this features, you would have already. When they start putting all of the features that you want in a phone, the next thing you are going to start saying, "verizon phones are too expensive."

I've had Verizon for 7 years...no, you're retarded I'm not going to complain about verizon phones being expensive...I always pay more for a 1 year contract 🙄

The crippled argument is directed toward the locked down GPS, bluetooth, and so many more features. Expecting WiFi on a phone that was never designed with it in mind is a bit out there, yes. But expecting to not get charged for using WiFi over your at home internet that you already pay for is reasonable(Granted, there are ways to disable Verizon from charging you for WiFi usage, but those break the contract).

Verizon is great if you don't care what you phone bill is, you just care that it works. But if you have a budget, then Verizon is not the best deal, and it's better coverage is minimal when you can't afford enough minutes/data to even use it.

Tell me a phone in which Bluetooth is locked and GPS is.

Tell me what you mean by "Many More Features?"

Because I know that 100% of our PDA/BB have unlocked GPS and Bluetooth now as of this month.

Our Cell Phones have unlcoked Bluetooth.

My lady has the enV and cannot bluetooth pretty much anything. She can't send or receive anything with my BB Pearl or my HTC Touch Pro, both of which are 100% unlocked. As well, there are other features that get filtered out. For example, she can't go to most ringtone download sites, she has to go to the Verizon specific one.

And there is no user error, either. Her previous Verizon phones didn't bluetooth files either, and the guys at the Verizon store said that bluetooth was locked to headsets and car sets only so you can't transfer ringtones, ect.

I think they just look down the dumbphones, I believe all PDAs are pretty much unlocked now.
And I believe they have even opened up some of the profiles on dumbphones. They are changing their policies...slowly, but they are changing.

It should have the same specs as the Bold, except it will support Verizon radios and 3G. It will also, of course, have the Verizon bloatware on it, just as the Bold has the At&T bloatware on it.

It has been the trend as of late with Verizon to put less restrictions and cripples on their high end phones, ie the Storm has unlocked GPS. I wouldn't expect anything, major, though. Bluetooth will still be locked down, along with any other down load service they can block and supplement with their own pay to play service.

Nope, all 3rd-Party apps ARE allowed.

I have XM Radio on my BB Curve.

Also, my GPS is unlocked.

My Bluetooth is unlocked as well.

Your information is all wrong.

Hence me noting that newer smartphones were not locked down as much... And as for BBs, my mentor had an 8703e, and he couldn't bluetooth any files with it. He now has a curve, and everything was still locked down on it until he upgraded to os4.5, which opened up bluetooth and GPS, but only limited bluetooth is available. He still can't transfer some pictures, anything he downloaded from verizon, and so forth.

Several companies are working on developing a DRM to allow downloaded content to be transferred between phones.

There is most likely a lot of regulations written into Verizon's contract with the companies they get that premium content from. While they are working to try and make something viable to transfer the files, some third parties (read, recording studios) are dragging their feet.

Hello,

I swithced to AT&T two weeks ago and couldn't be happier with the Bold. It is great and there is only ONE dead spot that I know of. I know of two with Verizon and I was with them for 13 years. The Niagara looks like a great phone, but the bold is basically the same and is out NOW. I have been with AT&T for three weeks and have had no problem...actually works in places in Connecticut that my VZW phone did not. If Verizon comes out with the Niagara and they do NOT CRIPPLE it, it looks like a great phone, BUT the same phone has been out for months from AT&T...

Just read on Crackberry and BGR,
the Verizon Bold/Niagra, will be a world phone, and will NOT have wi-fi.
So yes that kinda sucks but it will still be a nice little phone. The rest of the specs are close to the storm, but it will obviously have a smaller screen. Despite not having wi-fi
Im sure it will sell very nicely.
If I didnt already get the storm, I would consider the niagra, but Im likin my storm.

BGR has shed a little* more light on the mysterious Niagara. From this report, no WiFi.
