hands on with blackberry storm

so we had a blackberry training today, and the rep from rim had a storm, she passed it around and let us play for a few mins. i have to say im impressed and not. the phone is HEAVY! like 2 dares. the screen looks amazing, and the phone, imo, is a lot sexier then the iphone.

the screen is crisp and bright. the screen does click, like the keyboard or trackball of the curve. hers was pre-production (which is funny to me cause she told us some vz reps in texas had newer ones, and she works for rim lol). i pulled up the keyboard in a text message and it is actually cool to type on. it feels like a flat keyboard since you can click it. i think it will def be worth the wait, and she said 'sometime in november' so the best buy thing from boygeniu...

how much did you type on it? Have you used the curve? Could you maybe compare the two so that we could have a frame of reference?

i'll prolly get this phone no matter what, just because Im a crackberry addict, lol

And can shed any light onto the rumor floating around that verizon is opening an hour early the week the storm comes out (to help with any potential rush)

thanks for the mini review 🙂

The storm and curve are similar in size. The storm is a little bigger. The touch screen is very responsive. Storm keyboard is set up like the curve keyboard. Typing on the keyboard is very easy, unlike sometimes on the dare you will hit a letter and get the letter next to it. The storm keypad is great. I have big fingers and have no problems typing on it. The phone will be worth the wait. It may release online first, and to select customers before it hits the stores. The expected store time frame is the second week of November.

Yup.....i played with a demo storm late September. There has been some changes made. I think they will have the browser issue corrected by the time it releases. Do you have a curve now?

yeah i got the curve a couple of days before the May 9th release. I like the phone a lot, its been my fav verizon bb so far.

I was a little nervous about the touch screen, but everyone seems to be raving about it thus far.

You will be satisfied with the storm. It is well worth the money. The storm is head and shoulders better than the iphone.

You have to accept the two year agreement within 30 days of purchasing the phone or else you'll be receiving a nice little full retail charge back on your next bill. After that, you can wait as long as you want to activate the phone.

If I am correct, you have experienced the Storm already. If so, then how is the keyboard for the PDA. I tried the 8830 World, which I liked very much, but I am looking for it to either lower in price or get the storm if it can satisfy my emailing needs. The keyboard, as you know is very important to anyone emailing for their business needs. I was hoping that the Bold, that I truly wanted was going to be with Verizon, but it didn't work that way. Basically what I am asking is, if you are not just looking for a new toy, what choice of blackbery would you go with and why.
I appreciate your input.

The question is, emailing? Do you email a lot? The curve is great, but if you view a lot of excel, word or pdf documents and you need to keep them, then the storm is the phone you will need. You can save your pdf documents to your memory card, which will be supported up to 16 gb. You can send email with attendees on the email, so the question is what email functions you would using a lot. I would strongly suggest that you write down what features you use daily and would get the most out of, then the features that you would not necessarily need. Then I would go to a store to play with the curve and the storm. If you still are not sure, the samsung saga is available online in stores 12/1, htc touch online 11/24 in store 12/1 maybe wait for the...

Thanks for responding so quickly. I actually was comparing the World edition, since it's query keyboard is slightly larger.

In answer to your question, I am in insurance and everything you do is thru email. We do sometimes send our applications to our Underwriters in excel form. Presently, I have the Motorola Q, which does have an easy query keyboard to use, but when I get an attachment I always have to close the message and then reenter for it to open to get the rest of the message. With the World Edition, when I tried it, that was not necessary.
Back to my question I asked you earlier, is the Storms keyboard easy to use or is it too sensitive since it's not a button to push. Someone also said that the touch screen slows the phone down....

The storm is that good. I think the ability to save your excel spreadsheets is a key feature. You can create folders on your memory card so you would be able to organize them. Viewing the spreadsheets on the storm is awesome. The storm keyboard is very easy to use. It can be used as a querty, t9, or suretype. Also, with just moving your finger up or down will remove or bring the keyboard back. The viewing of documents on the world edition compared to the storm is like night and day. The screen quality is great. I have a 8gb card with 400 mp3 and 3 full length movies. The play on the storm with the full view with no issue. The only thing with the mp3, you can not skip thru the music to another song unless you shuffle, but I could deal with it...

I upgraded my 8330 to 4.5 and I can now view but not edit or create word documents (unless I want to pay, which I don't). Is this not available for the 8830? I know there is no new software, but I wondered if that Documents to Go app were not available.

There may be some third party apps that will do a better job with MP3s. One thing to try is a site called Orb that will maybe will allow you to access your entire MP3 collection...not sure.

i typed on it aa little, as the training was big and only one storm, and it was an early pe release model, so it took a little time to rotate. however the screen is very impressive, and actually moves 1-2 mm in when you click.

the curve keyboard to me is a hair cramped, but not the storm. i heard nothing about opening early, but that would mean my store will open at 8am. in my opinion, if it had wifi, and half the app store the iphone has, it will be top seller. some dont mind wifi missing, but at my house the reception is so-so, and the internet is kinda slow. the coolest thing about the phone is that it works pretty much like anyother blackberry. kinda like vzw phone, if you can use one you can use them all. kinda like instead of clicki...

Im pretty sure you can wait, the only issue would be the return policy. If you get it in november, then wait till xmas, your 30 days might be up.

Ive heard of people doing this before, Im sure it can be done.

as far as activation goes, im not positive on that one. I would just call your local store and let them know your situation. Im sure they have dealt with this before.
