Depending on if you stop pushing buttons for a time, it could be the backlight. I think the phone is set at default to dim after 7 seconds of inactivity.

My issue with my Voyager is that it WON'T dim out when out of use. If I'm looking at a web page and then need to stick the phone in my pocket for 20 minutes to go to a meeting, even if I lock the screen the display will stay fully lit the whole time, killing my battery when I would rather have the phone go dormant and wait for me to unlock it before firing the display back up.
I've got the Silver edition with the most current software, but I send very few text messages and would never bother with the T9 on the outside screen even if I did. The thing has a full QWERTY and I'm going to use it every time I need to type something more then 10 digits long.

I have a Voyager, but not with me. I'll check to see if it has the same ambient light sensor that the Dare has.
