Can you switch back-and-forth between two?

What I mean is, can I own to VZW phones and activate one or the other when that phone suits my need? For instance, say I'm doing something where a phone could easily get damaged, I might want to re-activate my old phone for the weekend.

Is this possible? If not, it should be.

Yeah that is definately possible. What kinds of phones do you have? The best option for you is to do online at verizonwireless.com and log into your My Verizon. It will just ask you for the ESN/MEID which is found when you remove the battery on the back of the phone (not battery). An ESN can be 8 characters (0-9 and/or A-F) or 11 digits (normally starting with a 0. The last possibility is the MEID (for newer phones) this is longer, generally A000000..... Then you just program the phone by dialing *228 send and select option 1 for programming. Turn the phone off and on and you're set.

The other options is to call into Customer service but there is generally a $20.00 processing fee to do this (unless you are a VIP/Merits customer)

It should be illegal for them to charge you a $20 fee to use a device you've already purchased. Clearly, you can't use more than one at once, but still, I don't see why they would care if you swapped activations on different phones whenever you wished.

One phone for backup, dirty tasks, the other for a night out on the town, etc. (Hey, it might even prompt people to buy more phones...)

And if I do it this way online, it's quick and free? (I'd rather do it online anyway...)

yes, the only issue is if there are certain feature changes between two models...say a cheap low end phone and say a voyager then it will not work because there will be a change in data/feature codes that will need changed on your account, but between two phones that are on the same level(say a razr and lg8350) you will have no issue

That's actually changed. It used to be that case. But online it will show you a box with the features that are being added and removed so you can pick. Online yes it is free

Is there still issues between ESN & MEID phones? I have heard of cases where someone with a MEID phone went back to an ESN phone, then tried to go back to a MEID phone, and it was denied online. That's my big concern should I want to go back to my Samsung a930 for any reason, or maybe even my Samsung a650. Both Samsung phones are ESN phones, while my Motorola W755 is a MEID phone. I don't have Vcast on my account. So that shouldn't be an issue there.

so if you are switching from a mot315 to a dare you can put the premium network service crap on there yourself?

I'm not sure how GREAT the ESN/MEID changes are online now. But I DO know that it used to be in the past that ANY type of difference in features (i.e: vcast to non-vcast, camera to non-camera, pda to non-pda) would not go thru whatsoever. They have made changes to that a while back ago. It should give you a box showing what features are being removed and added (similar to when CS reps do it) and give you options to correct them. But you're correct, if you attempt it online and it fails call CS let them know and they won't charge the fee

As stupid as it sounds, certain regions don't charge the $20 fee if you call in. Still, it'd be ideal if - in this particular situation - you did it online. Really, why call customer service that often when you can just do it yourself?

It's a nationwide policy. It's called the Device Initiation Fee - it's for any upgrades/exchanges or ESN/meid changes. It used to be for the midwest area that they didn't bill it, but now they do

...But if I have tried to do it online, and there has been an issue, or it said it couldn't do it, I have called CS and they resolve the problem and don't charge me. I tell them that I tried to do it online...if that helps.

Gah...I wish that they'd communicate these things better (unless I just missed it). I'll check the policy later today, just to be sure. Thanks for the heads-up.

Oddly, I checked on this today. My supervisor said that it's still not supposed to be charged in the Midwest. I couldn't seem to find details on it in OneSource, but that somehow doesn't surprise me. 🙄

The reason they care is you're using customer service ... you are costing VZW money. they have to pay someone to change the phone for you each time you want it done. By that I mean a rep is getting paid and you are using up that reps time.

Use the online solution.

Illegal to provide you with a service you can do yourself? That's what service charges are for...to give you service. There is NO CHARGE to swap ESN's online. Swap all you want...but if you want someone else to enter that ESN in the field on the computer, why would you expect that for free? VZW is not a non-profit company.

Please, enough. I never insinuated anywhere that I wanted to call customer service and have them do this for free. Stop with the Principles of Business 101 lectures.

I simply wanted to know how one went about reactivating an older Verizon phone they still had. People provided answers. Others provided snide insight into, perhaps, how certain cellphone company employees view their customers.

Looks to me that you need the education. You were the one complaining about how it should be illegal to charge you $20 to swap your ESN's when you can do it for free online...

I don't know you, I don't know if you are a customer. I do know you are not one of my personal customers. Mine are better informed than you are.

"It should be illegal for them to charge you a $20 fee to use a device you've already purchased."

"One more note, and another reason I won't simply shrug this one off, is I have to spend an additional $20 to return it. I'll be writing and calling VZW until that gets refunded."

"Agreed. In fact, I have about 3 1/2 weeks left to return mine via FedEx, so I'll pretty much have to. And if they re-release it with a better battery and good speaker, then I'm going to be pissed. Might require major letter-writing at that point."

Chappie;
Those are quotes from recent posts of yours. You are sounding like a Sprint customer man. Are there any charges or policies that you dont feel would require a credit, call to CS, or MAJOR letter writin...

What kind of dudemanbro industry lingo are you trying to throw on me? "You are sounding like a Sprint customer man." I don't even know, or want to know, what this means, or what slick phone company guys think it means.

I feel ripped off on the Boulder and the fact that I have to pay $20 to exchange what many other people are also finding to be a defective phone. I also think that, once you purchase something -- especially since it's Verizon's own product -- you should be allowed to use it whenever, even after you purchase another phone.

Like I said, this idea may even...
