Disappointed with the Boulder

gunny

Aug 1, 2008, 11:39 AM
Guys the Boulder has failed to live up to the standards of previous models, I can't give this phone my endorsement. The earpiece sound is muffled almost tinny sounding total crap. I have returned it for the Motorola Adventure which sounds amazing.

The speaker phone sucked too. It's simple I loved the phone but the call clarity just killed it for me....if it sounded good I would never consider giving it up. It sucked to have to return it, but the muffled sound was just to much for me. They need to rework this phone. The thread on hofo are reporting the same thing, bad sound quality and bugs with the contact lists, and ring tone default.

Your crazy Gunny, the speaker is about the same as previous models (not the greatest, not terrible).

Overall its my favorite so far, love the MP3 player capabilities, micro card, reception is good too.

Better build quality then the Type S, not as good as the Type V, but still overall a good phone.

agreed, if you turn the volume up all of the way the speaker seems to distort and it gets tinny.

I do not have the volume up all of the way and i am not experiencing such problems. I think the phone is plenty loud even at medium and I am using it in places with alot of background noise.

The default ring tone issue is kind of annoying but for all of the main people that I call I just changed the ring tones manually in each of the individual contacts.

Don't all the gzone's have the problem of distorting sound at max volume? My V does it and my brother's S will to at max volume. The phones work fine tho if lower then that tho.

I owned the Type-V for two years yeah the speaker phone was distorted at high volumes, but the sound quality on the reg phone was there at high volume..crisp and clear.

yeah man it is what it is. I don't know who is actually using this phone for PTT capabilities, but if you are and have used the Adventure and the Boulder then you know what I'm talking about. The Adventure has loud crisp sound, the Boulder doesn't. The Adventure has a huge speaker the Boulder does not. If anyone wanted to Love this phone, it was me..but I not keeping a phone just because it looks cool.

Sorry to hear that the handset you bought has failed to work properly. Keep in mind that this is new territory for VZW, and vendors who aren't accustomed to making these types of phones will no doubt have software and firmware issues to resolve.

Have you taken the phone into a repair center yet?

I'm a big Moto fan myself, although I admit that they typically are battery hogs and occasionally you can get a unit that has software issues. I have found that Moto phones usually have better RF than other handsets.

My ic502 for example, will pick up way better inside buildings than even the highly touted Sanyos that most Sprint folks are so proud of.

Good luck with your new Adventure! 😎

I am on Day 3 with this phone and I am extremely skeptical. I bought it because it finally seemed like they had made a G'zOne model that wasn't insanely bulky, but now I feel like a beta tester learning massive flaws with a product that was perhaps rushed to market.

1. The battery life is silly. It's like they're saying: "Be adventurous and outdoorsy! (but remain very close to a power source)" Yesterday I made very few calls and dropped quickly to half-power. My LG VX8300 kept power much, much, much longer than this.

2. The ringtone problem. Not a dealbreaker, but just amateur stuff from Verizon, as if the thing was never tested.

3. The earpiece quality is atrocious, and it sounds like I'm talking to someone at the bottom of a well ...

3. The earpiece quality is atrocious, and it sounds like I'm talking to someone at the bottom of a well with plastic wrap covering their mouth. It's like they took a 1998 phone, removed its parts and encased them in a "rugged" frame. My Nokia circa 2000 sounded better, and this is just simply unacceptable.

I really, really want to like this phone, as I am hard on my equipment and it seems durable. But I don't know if I can live with these problems. How can I make Verizon aware of this? Will they issue a better edition soon? I don't know what to do here, and it makes me very frustrated.

I hear you on all your points not to mention the PTT bug. I couldn't live with the voice quality. T...

What should I do? Switch to the Adventure while I still can? I really miss my VX8300 now. Is the Adventure as good or better than that common old standby?

What I really want is for them to fix Boulder somehow. This probably won't happen, but I'm about as bummed as I've been as a cellphone buyer the past eight years. I'm not ready to give it up yet, but a few more days and I might be...

Is Verizon aware of this reaction?

The guys on howardforum have emailed verizon and casio on the problem..according to someone on this site and hofo verizon is aware. But with the water resistant membrane the sound quality I feel will not improve. The Adventure is fantastic I'm extremely impressed with this phone and it's MILL spec, just not water resistant. Do what you want, but don't hesitate to jump on the Adventure the voice clarity is first class. Go read the reviews it's the best phone that I've used in a very long time.

Aaaaaaaand another thing...

The vibrate is hard to feel in your pocket. I think perhaps this is because it's inside such a shock-resistant device.

Why such a wimpy battery?

Any other recommendations on models to check out if I send it back? The Adventure sounds fine. I really had a good two years with my LG VX8300; it did the simple stuff that I needed it to do.

(Another thing about the Boulder -- why are we going back in time with T9 that doesn't predict words? The 8300 had Word feature that constantly learned words and would predict them without you having to type out every letter. Another example of how this seems like a phone from many years ago repackaged in a rugged new frame).

OK one more thing about Boulder, too. From what I gather, the original and second-gen G'zOne models did not have terrible battery life -- so why the 3G? Doesn't follow logic.

ONCE AGAIN, VERY FRUSTRATING.

I wrote off a long list of complaints to a Verizon rep. (don't know if she'll pass them along to someone higher), and have finally reached the breaking point with this terrible phone.

Looks good, feels good -- but works awfully. Great disappointment. I guess the Adventure is next to try?

I'm sending this failure back, and I'm betting VZ loses a ton of money on this one. Maybe they'll learn next time that customers aren't moronic enough to accept a product with decade-old battery life and sound quality.

What's sad is that everything I've ever read about the original (Type V) G'zOne -- despite its mammoth proportions -- was positive. How does a company release a 3G model that's half the phone the original was?

Curious to see your experience.

its kinda like the iphone 3G. there was so much hype behind it, they knew people would buy, buy, buy. but unlike the stupid iphone custies, VZW custies are smart enought to complain and return a product that is crap. whereas the iphone nerds will say, "well its still an iphone and at least im lucky enough to have one, even if it cant do things my free out the door POS phone can do."

It seems all the phones are going downhill, which stinks. There were better phones four years ago! To this day, the Audiovox CDM-9900 -- two phones ago for me -- was the best device I've used, and I carried it until it literally fell to pieces.

Nothing has ever replaced it, and stuff just keeps getting crappier. Companies trying to cut corners on the production end, perhaps? Just went and read the G'zOne Type V reviews -- solid phone unlike this useless Boulder.

Why won't Verizon put out a solid product that's not a slideout keyboard for teens who text each other every five minutes from across the room?

Ah. I'd go back to the Audiovox 9900 if they still made it. Even my LG 8300 if it were new.

Just called Verizon's return line. Didn't realize I'd be out another $20 to swap out (I'm going to test the Adventure tomorrow before doing it), but I plan to write someone at Verizon about the Boulder. It might be worth every penny of that $20 swap-out fee.

I feel like I'm talking to the adults in old Peanuts specials. Wah-wah, wawawah-wah-wah.
