Why do all the available Verizon phones suck!?
I've been struggling with my Motorola 180e for the past 2 years or so. About a year ago, the power connector on this phone stopped working about 90% of the time. When I want to charge the thing, I need to sit there for 20 minutes each time, carefully aligning, bracing and taping the phone until I get a power connection. Very often, I have to do this more than once a charge. I'm fed up and I want a new phone.
So I go to Verizon's phone offerings...and maybe it's me...but it appears that VZW's phone offerings are either cheap, introductory crap...or real expensive palm-like devices. And there's not many choices either!!!
I want a phone that gets good reception, has tri mode operation, sound...

Sprint uses the same technology and has a much better phone selection, especially Nokia's.

This was why I left Verizon last month for Cingular. No regrets.

Oh well, things have changed. I see Sprint's Nokia selection is down to only two phones, so I'm adjusting my post. Just the same, if Verizon will activate a Sprint phone you find appealing, then consider that option.
If none of that meets your needs, ah well, but the selection is getting better.

Actually, there's a bunch of VZW phones launching Feb. 1st or close to it- the LG VX-8000, the Samsung A-890, the Audiovox 8940. And Nokia has recently said they're going to make more CMDA phones for the North American market, which should benefit Verizon.
If none of that meets your needs, ah well, but the selection is getting better.
The original poster seems to have some odd ideas... even the lower-end VZW phones are pretty good, and the network of course is the best. Don't know what 'Samsung horror stories' he's heard, but mine's been pure buttah. đ

Yeah, that'd be cool. But I'm pretty happy already. My Samsung 530, a 'low-tech' straightforward phone, has performed wonderfully for me so far.

What I find funny is that the two nokias that ran parallel with the mot-v120e have been extinct for several months now. The new nokia is the speakerphone based 6015.
LG having a bad rep?? I heard that from the kiosk today as well.. I think that kiosk worker was on something. LG is the #1 phone brand I sell. The TM510, LG4400 and later models have been incredible.
Personally I could give two flyings about how "cool" or "feature filled" a phone is. Can it ring, make calls and receive calls clear? Yes. Can it do text messaging? Yes. That is real...

What? Your car has a radio, a 12v outlet, adjustable seats, luggage rack and air conditioning? All most people want from a car is that it get them from point a to point b. Personally I could give two flyings about how "cool" or "feature filled" a car is. Can the engine start, the wheels role and the steering wheel steer? Yes. That is really all anyone needs a car for.đĄ

I have the grey 530 that came later... and that DIDN'T come with both batteries. But I later got the extended batt seperately.
Do you need it with the 530? Yeah, kinda. Battery life with the std batt isn't great. Talk time is ok, but I notice that if you fiddle with your phone a lot (i.e. screen is on), yeah, you can run down the standard pretty quickly.
With the extended its fine though. đ

I think stragegrey may not have had all the facts when he wrote his rant.
Admittedly, Verizon doesn't have cool phonesYes. Maybe to utter phone dorks like us. But to the other 41,999,999 customers in the US...I think Verizon's lineup is perfectly adequate. Verizon's entire lineup does what it's supposed to do...work.

You're absolutely correct. I *don't* have all of the facts...and that's actually why I posted. After rereading my post, it certainly does read like a rant...but it's more like a cry for help.
If you dig deep enough, you will find horror stories about every damn phone that's sold...and I know that's a cliche...because I've specifically concerned with VZW phones, since that's my service provider, I dug deepest on VZW phones.
Having said that, the spirit of my post was very much in the vein of:
"3/4 of the phones offered don't work for my needs, the other 1/4 has some horror stories...tell me why I should disregard t...

Don't know what to tell ya... if you think most of the major phone manufacturers stink, you're probably not going to find much to like. You also may not like the new Audiovox 8940, Samsung A890, or LG VX-8000, either because of the maker or because they're 'not straightforward enough' for you.
But for myself, I have no problems with VZW's lineup... several phones I like, lots of new phones being introduced. Can't really see how a 'cry for help' is necessary. *shrug*

Well, considering that you diss Samsung, Motorola, and LG, it'd be closer to say that, in your opinion, "3/4 of the phones I've heard horror stories about, the other 1/4 don't meet my needs."

I've had Sprint, Cingular and Verizon (not T-Mobile), and Verizon's service is superior - no news there. They have some great phones that do what they're advertised - make calls and hold signal. I'll admit they don't have the perfect phone for me yet: flip, Palm, speakerphone. I'm still holding out though. We were teased with news about the Samsung i640/645 (Windows, but not a bad alternative to Palm), but I haven't heard anything in months.
This phone is so good, that I might just pass on the Lg Vx 8000.
No Complaints Here!!!!!!
instead of some phones that do half and other phones that do the other half.

Really people, there is only so much stuff they can cram in a phone and keep the size down. The reason that they dont make a phone like that is becuase nobody would buy a phone the size of a brick, at least not these days. In order to keep size and cost down, not all features can be implemented.
That's true. Another dirty little secret of the tech industry is that battery technology hasn't exactly kept pace. Put everything and the kitchen sink into a phone, and give it the biggest brightest screen on the market, and watch your battery life go out the window. âšī¸
Not every product needs every single feature. In fact, cramming every feature available, whether or not it makes sense, is som...

A similar issue is plaguing the auto industry as well--all these DVD systems, high end sound systems, power every-damned-thing that consumers expect is taxing the 12V electrical system to the snapping point. Delphi came up with a 39V battery that is the same size as the regular 12V ones, but it's not being marketed yet because there's resistance to changing over to a higher voltage system--there will be issues with...

Why can't they make a phone that can act as a heart monitor, a thermometer, a flashlight, bluetooth, mp3 player, speakerphone, removable memory, 4.1 megapixel camera with an actual GOOD lense and optical zoom (not that digital junk)... hell, a mini-dv cam would be better. It's true, though:
Bluetooth
Camera
Data-Capable
Expansion Card
Speaker Phone
These are the features that most people will want in a modern cell phone.

Most people?!
Most people on this site maybe. The majority of cell users don't care about most of that stuff (save a large segment that likes cameras and speakerphones).

Don't you think that most people look down the road a bit when buying a new phone? My StarTac had text messaging, but when I wought it I never thought I would use it.
Now to say that a large segment likes cameras, that's great, but how do you get 50 megapixel pictures off the camera to develop them?
Well, then you need either Bluetooth or an ...

So how do you make the leap from that to thinking he's advocating that Verizon should stop offering camera phones? Trust me, even if that's what he's advocating (and its obviously not), VZW is far too in love with their 'pix' messaging revenue to ever stop releasing camera phones.
