I need organizational help, but don't want to pay for data packages

I'll say up front that I am a current VZW, I am happy with VZW and have no plans to change.

I have problems staying organized. I occasionally forget doctors appointments, tasks I need to attend to (which doesn't make my wife too happy) etc. I can't remember phone numbers/addresses/etc, so the contacts feature would be nice. Frequently throughout the day I think of things I need to address at work or home, but forget them because I don't write them down. I am pretty much like an absent minded professor, without the PhD. I need a way to get organized so I thought a PDA or Smart Phone would help. At the beginning of the day, I take a look and see what I have going on that day and at the end of the day, I take a look and see what I mi...

Every phone has a contacts list... use it?

there's a 'notepad' in most phones that you could jot things down in

Most phones have a calender that you can break down a put reminders in.

Do you need it to sync to your computer? Cuz from the sounds of things you don't need a PDA at all.

True, but most calendars on phones aren't as good as those on PDA's. However, one thing I've done, whether I have a PDA active or not is use vtext.com to set Alerts and reminders. It's great for annuals, like birthdays and anniversaries.

You aren't required to have a data package on PDAs and Smartphones, only Blackberry devices. I would recommend any windows based device so you can sync your calendar from your computer whenever you need to using ActiveSync (if you can get the ActiveSync to work that is 😉 ) Just beware if you use web/email, even unintentionally, you will be billed per KB. To ensure no usage charges, you could have the data blocked, but then you wouldn't be able to use picture messaging as that does use the data network. Hope this helps 🙂

it is the battle cry of the cheapskate: I want a PDA without the data plan

they should put an ETF on the Advanced Data Device Discount.

I mean really..who can't afford $29.99 a month for unlimited email and web data? If you can't squeeze thirty lousy bucks out of your budget, then get rid of your cell phones altogether. they're a luxury

Actually, I think cellphones are more a necessity in our Society than a luxury, for safety sake mostly ... it's the home phone that's a waste of money. 30.00 a month is a lot of money, and not all of the PDAs offer the unlimited data at that price anyway, some are still 44.99, which IMO is a better value because it gives you the Wireless Sync which is AWESOME.

Exactly 30 bucks a month is a lot of money for many, coming down on someone who can't afford it pretty immature.

You're absolutely correct about the $30 per month BROWN27. Nowadays, $30 might be a week's worth of gasoline for someone who only commutes a short distance to work.

a pda can be very useful to someone who simply does not need to be on the internet on a tiny itty bitty phone. really. i have a laptop. i don't think that means i'm a "cheapskate." although, yes i think $30 a month for the internet on a phone is just a waste of money. i don't use a pda for that reason, but there's times i wish i had a better calendar, etc. on my cellphone. geez, some people take their tech toys a bit too seriously...

You're going to defeat the whole purpose of wanting the device to "keep you organized". because you'll have to block everything to avoid kb charges, which will block picture and text messaging. "Accidental" KB usuage on a smartphone/pda is not creditable.

It's a little like buying a truck with a snow plow wanting to use the blade only as a bug shield.

The whole purpose of them is to retrieve email and browse the web.

My advice, stick with a cell phone and use your calender, it works great and the suggestion on vtext is great too. I use them to keep track of all my appointments.
