Using CDMA Phone In China???

tksimon

According to Verizon (phone CS) I can now use my Verizon CDMA phone in China without any need for the rent-a-phone service.

Can anyone confirm this? I'm leaving for China in a week and can't be stranded on the other side of the world without a phone.

Thanks.

😉 Yea it'll work but be weary of the pass thru toll charges they can range from .20/min- to what ever.. I think the most I have ever seen was .99/min They are not regulated... But your service will work best in heavily populated areas outside of that good luck... I work that queue everyday so I'm very familiar w/ the cov.

In my opinion, nobody should use a U.S. phone overseas (whether Verizon, a GSM phone with a U.S. sim card, or any other phone), unless it is for business purposes and the person's business is paying the tab. Otherwise, it's far too expensive. I always rent phones where I go. The cost is cheap (usually around $1.00 per day) and the cost for making calls is far cheaper. I then notify the people who need to know my phone number, either through a phone call or by e-mail. That's what works best for me.

yeah, but at least if you have a world gsm phone you don't need to rent when overseas. you can just go to a local service provider and pick up a prepaid sim with a local number for a few bucks.

You can, but (i) when you put in the overseas sim card you have in effect a new phone (new phone number, lack of your address book etc.), and (ii) it's virtually as easy to find phone rentals as it is overseas sim cards. Six of one, half a dozen of another, is the end result.

Good link, but it needs to be updated. As you can see China is not listed, and I think there is one or two other countries that needs to be updated.

Thanks! I'll be Shanghai and down south in the Guangdong Province so I should be OK. Is there anyway to get (or see) a coverage map?

Mine worked in Venezuela, I was shocked when I received the bill though, I was so excited using my phone down there, I got carried away ☚ī¸
