can verizon only send me alert sms?

i disable sms with verizon since i don't use it. unfortunately, i can't receive alerts from verizon or the gov. can verizon turn on the free alert sms for my phone but disable all other sms?

At this point, the answer is no. If you remove the text block, you would be charged $0.20 per sms sent or rcvd. You can add a Premium SMS block that will keep those nasty and expensive things away.
