Kids and texting

chuckbrown

Over new years I gave my kid a cell phone so he can use to call me after school. He was not soppose to use the phone until friday when its free for the weekend. A few days ago I got my bill. It was over $600 dollars. He has been using it to text his friends at night. Verizon will only give me $100 credit. It was a mistake. Why do I have to pay a $500 dollar phone bill?

You have to pay because they are valid charges. Why would you expect Verizon to credit charges that were obviously not their fault?

Your child mistakenly sent several hundred dollars worth of text messages? Oops. Wait, thats not a mistake on the kids part, but a mistake that you made. Using the same logic, can I ask my credit card company to credit me back for things that my wife bought? It was a mistake.

Chuck, I work with teen-agers at my church, and recently, they had a "I ran my parent's cell phone bill up $$________, and they took my phone away from me for ______ length of time." I'm sorry to say that you are completely SOL for getting another credit. it was your responsibility to monitor your kid's usage, and further to limit that usage since you have that capability. a simple call to *611 during the bill cycle of texting coulda fixed it quite easily. consider the $100 credit a gift. that you wouldn't get anywhere else.

I'll credit your account 1 minute, call someone who cares. Verizon has 65 MILLION customers. your few phones with them for 3 yrs deserves.... a NE2 credit. which they already gave you. o, and failure to pay a reduced bill will result in service disconnection. Pony up the dough, buckwheat.

you gave your kid a cell phone 'new years' and he was suppose to use it to call you after school? 😕 what time does he get off of school, 9:01 pm? 😕 and you just got your bill in March? and him texting at night has nothing to do with it, a text is a text no matter what time it is...and now you're asking this forum why you have to pay your bill, your entire post sounds fishy 😕

The point of this whole thing is that you should not have given your kid the cell phone. If you weren't sure what he was going to do with it, you shouldn't have given it to him. Verizon Wireless has no obligation to you to credit your bill any amount of money no matter how long you've been a customer. No company would do this for you!!! This was your mistake by giving your cell phone to your kid and not knowing what they would do with it. Now, you need to pay the bill, like a responsible adult, and think about getting your kid a texting plan if you plan on letting them keep the phone.

Like a previous user said, this is the same thing as a credit card. If a family member purchases something with it, you have an obligation to pay it off, n...

Trust me I already smacked the brat. Any recommendations on things I can say so verizon will give me a full credit. $500 dollars is way to much. Like I said before I have been with verizon for 3 years.

Any help would be great

There's nothing you will be able to do to get a full credit. Verizon shouldn't have even given you the 100 dollar credit. The responsibility is all on you to pay the whole bill. Like we said before, a credit card company would never credit your account because you "accidentily made a purchase". That doesn't fly. It's not going to fly with Verizon either. That's why they were generous and gave you 100 dollars, which they shouldn't have.

Well Chuck I don't think you should have gotten such a rude reply from people but that is nothing uncommon from this site.

I agree though you should of thought about this before giving a young person a phone.

I would try the honest approach with Verizon asking them if there is anything more they can do. Tell them to look at your bill you never have gone over before and it was a clear mistake ask for a 1 time credit. Tell them you will make changes to your account to reflect a better plan that works better for the usage you are using.
You signed a contract to pay for what you use Verizon doesn't owe you anything really. I would call them again and see what happens

Hope it helps

because you are stupid to not put a txt block on the line if you didnt want your kid txting. im tired of ppl like you thinking that we should give you credit because your deamon child wont listen to you and rings up a huge bill. its not our fault, its yours. grow the hell up and take responsibility for your offspring. the other reason i hate people like you is because obviously you are a poor parent who cant teach their kids right from wrong and then lead by horrible example with crap like this. now your kid is going to grop up thinking that its always someones elses fault or problem and that you/he can do no wrong and that if you cry and moan enough to the right person, that he will get his way. you my friend, and ppl like you, are the down...

By the sounds of it, YOU left the store without something that you needed. What sales rep wouldn't offer text messaging (I am sure they said to themselves "Man I would hate to make some money this month. Data, Who needs that???"). Most likely they offered you text messaging and you thought it was too expensive so you did not add it. I mean seriously, $10/month ($120/year or $240/contract term) is a heck of a lot mor...
