I am anxiously awaiting for Verizon to come to Charlottesville, Virginia, sometime in the 2009/2010 time frame. If anyone out there has any updates as to how soon I can get rid of my current carrier and move over to the best there is, I would appreciate it.

With UVA as well as several other colleges in that "missing section" it would be a GREAT addition to The Network. I too, look forward to this happening. As of now, we roam on Alltel there, I believe.

wait ... I have a lot of friends that go to UVA. I have a lot of friends that live in C-ville. I used to party down in UVA a couple of years ago. We all have Verizon Wireless and it's fine.

the way i understand it and i could be wrong, Veerizon does not have the correct licenses. Verrizon needs a license or rights to spectrum in an area it wants to build a tower/ network. The governing body of the wireless industry, the FCC, auctions off rights to said spectrum every so often. current cellphones at Verizon use the 850 mhz(pre telecommunicarions act of 1996) and 1900 MHz/PCS
So in this area Verizon does not have a license to build and maintain their own network and therefore can not legally sell service to people who's addresses fall outside of Verizon's primary service network

I thought the same thing, Below. However, on August 27, 2007, our daily newspaper, The Daily Progress, headlined on the front page, no less, that Verizon would absolutely be here by 2010. No mention was made about the auction, which, btw, involves 700 Mhz bandwith, which Alltel is going to need desperately to stay solvent. They sold themselves to two financial holding companies on May 21st of last year to get cash to pay down debts and have money on hand for the auction. IF they win some frequencies, they will probably be around for a while. If they fail, my thinking is that since they are not in control of their own destiny, that is, they don't own themselves any longer, it could be the end of Alltel as a service provider, Chad and all...
