Verizon Wireless is requiring customers to opt out of allowing the carrier to share their customer proprietary network information (CPNI), a new policy that could spark protest from the carrier’s customers.

Verizon Wireless wants to sell you stuff you'll like, and would be likely to buy from them.

Verizon Wireless needs to know what you like.

Verizon Wireless would like to study how you use your phone.

Verizon Wireless operates a wireless network. Studying you is not something they feel like doing directly.

Verizon Wireless would like to have some other company study you for them.

Verizon Wireless needs permission from you for the other company to study you.

Once Verizon Wireless has the other company study you, the other company will say you might like Cool New Feature A.

One day you'll be browsing Mobile Web and a banner ad will show up saying "Hey! You! Try Cool New Feature A"

Pretty much what it comes down to is that the FCC changed the rules on telecom companies so they now have to have your permission to share CPNI. It something that has always been shared, but the FCC now requires you to know about it and thus be able to opt out of it.

One of the biggest uses of CPNI was for customers that had both Verizon Wireless and Verizon Communications to be targets with One Bill ads to get their landline and wireless bill on one bill.
