I am getting ready to get my own plan, its time for me to get out from under my parents wings now that i have a job, and i am wondering if i need to get a credit card or can i just use a debit card for my credit check?? What would the charge be if i do not get a credit card, it is not a big deal for me to get one but it will just take time to get one. im not in a rush but just wondering what all i will need to do to accomplish getting my own plan with verizon?

They base it on your credit history.
You could go to verizon store with cash and it wont affect their credit decision.

So if i get a plan and a phone for myself and i pay with cash, they can not do a credit check on me?

There is a program VZW has that "steps-down" a deposit one level if you're going from a family plan to your own individual account. There may be no deposit required...it's not based on whether you have a credit card or not...

If you dont have any credit history at all, (i.e. no credit loans, no payment of credit cards over time) you will most likely have a $400 deposit.
...
but with the "step down" it will probably drop to $125...

I have never heard of anyhting called a "step down program"
The credit check is automated, if the previous account is in his parents name, and you run a new app for him, how the heck can it tell that he is associated with the previous account, his SSN is not affiliated with his parents at all, he is just using the phone?
He will still come back with a $400 deposit.

There is a step down program here in the midwest. If the parents lines were originally approved with a 0 deposit then the child can get their deposit down one level. A 400 becomes 125 and a 125 becomes 0. I was thinking the child had to be enrolled in college though... It's fairly new and I've never used it.

The step down program was effective on April 9,2007. it will allow the the AOL team to work with sales channel to allow them step down the deposit. there are requirements. your parents must not be requried to put a deposit down, the existing account must be current with 6mtns of good payment history-no suspends, hotlines, or delinguencies...must be a secondary line a family share....
400.00=125.00
125.00=0.00

No, that's not what they were saying. A credit check will be required on any contract plan. The credit check is based upon your credit history. If you don't have any credit (no credit cards, loans, etc.) then you will probably have a $400 deposit. A debit card doesn't help you build credit, it's just a link to a checking or savings account. The form of payment in the store won't matter either. If you don't have any credit or no credit cards then getting one would probably be a good idea. You'll then have to wait 6 months or so for a good credit history to build showing you've made payments on time with the card.
