If apple really wanted their phone to sell good, they would release it with every carrier just like motorola did with their razr and that was a success.

Plus, the razr didn't come out on every carrier at the same time, and it didn't get to CDMA until almost 5 years after the original came out. It does so well because moto does a really good job of making sure that everyone wants something before they release it......
Kinda like iPhone people are trying to do.

Only 2 years Separate the GSM and the CDMA RAZR.
RAZR via wikipedia.org
Product development began in July 2003 with sales starting the following year. By July 2005, Motorola reported to analysts that the RAZR V3 was the most popular clamshell, something that it owes almost entirely to its distinctive looks and small size.
Motorola released a CDMA version of the RAZR for Verizon Wireless, Cricket Communications, US Cellular, and ALLTEL on November 21, 2005, called the RAZR V3c. Yeah, look at the RAZR. It was much more desirable when it wasn't out with every carrier. Now absolutely everyone has it, and it's dirt cheap. There goes the cool factor. Not that I'm an iPhone fan. But releasing it with one carrier will keep the hype up.

Apple knows the phone will sell. That's why there isn't any rebates. I'm pretty sure at&t paid Apple a pretty penny to make it exclusive. VZW was offered the iPhone first I believe.

Your right Apple wanted Verizon to be the provider and for very good reason. Since this is apple first cell phone they wanted to used best carrier in the market Verizon, they are scared that a provider like at&t network wont be up to the task and might reflect badly on apple celluar line. The iPhone is only for at&t but that doesn't mean apple cant make another iphone or type for any other carrier.

Then immediately after product launch, file a lawsuit against Verizon, Sprint and AllTel with the intent of forcing the CDMA carriers to open their networks to unlocked devices, and launch a huge publicity campaign around the lawsuit, making the CDMA customers aware that Apple wants to make a CDMA phone, but carriers are blocking it. Even if they lose the lawsuit, customer demand would force CDMA carriers to open their networks to unlocked CDMA devices because customers would be fleeing CDMA carriers to get a GSM iPhone.
Apple had the opportunity to break the locked phone carri...

This is why another reason why Verizon past on the iPhone other then Apple wanted the customer personal information for every iPhone buyer and Verizon didnt want to realese it. Apple wanted to uses its i-Tunes while Verizon wanted to use it VCast music features and both couldn’t come to an accord”. There where more reason also Circuit City dealers of Verizon wouldn’t be able to sell the iPhone nor would indirect agents.
