why is it that verizon advertises the not all-digital areas but sells a horid selection of phones to use in the non digital areas?

I'm not sure but I know a big part of the phones coming out now are Tri-mode again. The LG 6100 is a Tri-Mode. The 710 is also Tri-Mode.

All the area's that Verizon actually owns are all digital. So realistically in the markets where they sell phones she shouldn't have to worry. I understand that there are areas's close by and areas where people travel that are not digital though. I'm sure there are a lot of areas on the America's Choice area that are analog. That's not Verizon's problem though. Thank them for letting you roam for free there.

I live in a digital area on Long Island, and in my house the signal sometimes turns to analog....when friends are over who have all digital phones, they get no service...Having a tri mode phone is essential, I believe no matter where you live....I currently have the Audiovox CDM 9900 and am happy...

I happen to think the necessity of tri-mode is one of the most hard-to-kill myths in our whole industry. Go to the Verizon website and bring up the coverage locator. It will show exactly where there is digital and extended digital areas. You will notice that MOST of the America's choice map is digital, by a wide margin. Also, some people think they need tri-mode phones because they have an old one that still goes into analog mode here and there. The fact is, sometimes a tri-mode phone will go into analog when it doesn't need to, when a phone with strong digital reception would pull in a signal no problem.

Yeah, but JDigi, how is anyone gonna 'kill the myth of the necessity of trimode' when carriers like Sprint until pretty recently had coverage maps that had ENORMOUS analog areas in them?

I dont agree Jdigital. I live on Long Island, and sometimes friends come over who have digital only phones, and when my tri mode phone is in analog, they have no service.....

Well, there are always exceptions. It just irks me when everybody ASSUMES they need tri-mode. I'm not opposed to Verizon offering a couple of models for situations such as yours, but I think 90% of people who agonize over needing a tri-mode phone are misinformed. It seems a little odd that you would have trouble getting a signal on Long Island... I wonder if there is some strange topography or other interference in your house? I live in a much more rural area than you (in Oregon), and I NEVER have a problem with a digital only phone. Right now I have the new Audiovox 9900 actually, and it hasn't gone to analog once yet.

to add more info to this, currently Verizon's entire network whether its pink or red on our map is about 4% analog. Due to an FCC mandate we along with everyone else have to be 100% digital by 2006. The pink areas on the map doesnt necessarily mean analog, stop into any VZW store and they can show you super detailed maps even down to street level and a smiliarly detailed map is available at Verizonwireless.com..... I work in Denver and we still sell tri-modes more than some other markets b/c of the mountains. Whats left of analog is located mostly in CO, WY, MT, ID and UT

Mine used to until I did 2 things.

1. I threw it across the room in disgust. I would be digital outside my house, analog inside and have no service in my room. Also it was all roaming in my house at $0.69 a minute.

2. Got another carrier. I have had T-Mobile and Sprint since I left Verizon 7 months ago and have only roamed in buildings that are obviously bad for signal, parking garages, certain malls, highrises. But never at my house or when I'm driving around town. Can't say that for Verizon.

If they have the biggest coverage and the best service, then why did 2 smaller companies that everyone here rags on give me perfect service.

By the way, I live in Phoenix AZ, so you can see that I don't live in some little hick t...

I actually did do the whole *228 thing. I forgot to mention that. I also went through about a dozen phones in 2 years (I only threw the last one at the wall).

I would do the *228 and update my roaming. Try my phone for a couple of days with no luck. I went to the Verizon stores, they just told me to do it again. Did that, didn't help. Had them do it just to make sure that it was done right, didn't work.

Also they were telling me that the T720 and T730 were the best phones on the market, even after I found out about all the trouble they were having.

In my part of Phoenix, Sprint and T-mobile work great. AT&T wireless is so-so, so is Verizon. Other parts of town it is different.

Oh well, I don't discurage people fro...

Huh? Verizon's got close to a dozen trimode phones to choose from, with yet another arriving any day now (LG VX-6100).

From what you've said in the past, it seems like you only like Motorola. So its not really VZW's fault if you don't trust good phone makers like Samsung, LG, Nokia, Audiovox, etc. Maybe you remember some of them as being bad 'back in the day' but they make quality phones now.

If its Moto-only and trimode-only for you, then either get a v710, or wait for a v260 or v810 to possibly show up. Or realize that other companies than Moto know how to make phones now. The Audiovox 9900 is widely said to be a terrific trimode phone (read the user reviews on this site), and the buzz on the incoming LG VX-6100 is favorable as wel...

Ah, but gmc, there's several VZW phones with an outside screen and trimode, plus a speakerphone to boot:

Audiovox CDM-8910
Audiovox CDM-9900
LG VX-6100 (coming very soon)
Motorola V710

If it were me, I'd wait a little bit for the 6100 and choose between it and the 9900... though with the 9900 being in short supply and an apparently excellent phone it might be better to dive on it ASAP than take a chance waiting 😕

Oops... I think you're right... I went over to the Audiovox website and apparently its the Bell Mobility variant of the 8910 thats trimode... the VZW variant isn't. Bummer.

However, the Audiovox 8900 for VZW is trimode and only recently discontinued (i.e. you can still find one somewhere), so I guess we could replace the 8910 on the list with that, if gmc is ok with the outer screen being non-fancy. Of course, the 9900 blows 'em both away, if word of mouth is any judge.

I wish we could of received some AVX 9900's... I'm dying to tear into one and play with it.

Yeah apparently the ones that went out have deeply satisfied the customers that bought them.

The 8900 tri-mode camera phone is GOOD. The speaker is a little lacking to be honest but a good solid phone.

GMC, as GWFox just pointed out to me, the Verizon version of the Audiovox 8910 is actually NOT trimode (though the Bell Mobility version of it is).

Just wanted to warn ya so you didn't end up getting stuck looking at the wrong phone.

i re-read my last post, and realized i said 'no phone' when i meant no camera.... i dont really need one, but i am planning on getting a phone for my wife.. and because of her work she cannot have a camera... but is often in non-digital areas... hence need for trimode. the outside display on the phone is kinda a nicety but makes no sense to not have one

You're killin' me here, gmc 😁

Ok, trimode, NO camera? You'd be looking at probably either a Samsung 650, LG VX-3200, or Audiovox 8600. Or you could hunt around on Ebay or at 3rd party agents for a good discontinued phone like the LG VX-4400 that met your requirements.

Unfortunately, of all of those, only the 8600 and the 4400 have outside screens, and said external screens are not color (though who really gives a fig? Color external screens are near-impossible to read in daylight).

Probably what SHOULD have been the perfect model for your needs was the Samsung 650... but Samsung inexplicably dropp...

There's also the Motorola V60s, if you're ok with the non-color internal screen. Whatever its flaws it seems very solidly built, though some ppl really don't like it... heard it was buggy when first released, perhaps its better now.

is the audiovox 8600 a third party agent phone? I do not see it on the vzw.com site.

tho... by the reviews i see of it, i am more scared of it than i would hve beeen of the moto t730!

perhaps somebody will be smart enough to bring on more phones after the end of the month.

The 8600 is a very recently discontinued phone, far as I know. Yep, I'm sure there's still some out there to be had at 3rd party agents. No need to be scared of them either... my girlfriend has had one for awhile and likes it well enough. She's not terribly picky, though.

Don't personally know of any new trimode + no camera phones coming for VZW. The 6100 finally showed up on their website just tonight, but unfortunately for you, it has el camera.

99% of the network IS digital, but the old analog network is still there so some people may pick up better signal in analog. Some people want the peace of mind in having both too.

I am on an old Single Rate Wesr plan, and VZ will not let me get a digital only plan, unless I give up my current plan and move to America's Choice, and I'm not about to do that.
