9900 or wait for new Treo?

Hi everyone,

I've wanted a PDA/phone combo for a while. Of course Verizon doesn't have the Samsung i500, but has the i600. Then long after everyone else, Verizon got the Treo 600 which has most everything I want except analog and a flip (do they make star trek ringers for it?). 🤣
Now there are rumors about the Treo 650 coming, but who knows when for VZW...

I just saw the Audiovox 9900 which I could buy this week for a low price of $50 (w/ 2 yr contract). I'm debating about getting the 9900 now or waiting for the Treo 650. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks!

Tom

(Samsung T300 still works well)

If you want a PDA you do not want the 9900 it is just a phone, a good phone from what I have seen so far, but one the less a phone and not a PA. I love my Treo 600, do not worry about it not being a flip, it is great.

The Audiovox CDM-9900 is a great phone. If it's a "PHONE" you want buy it before 10/110/04. If your looking for more than a phone, don't buy a phone.

Thanks! Have you had any problems with it dropping calls since it doesn't have analog?

You're talking about Granny Smith and Figi apples here.

The Treo 600 is a great phone - it gets the best signal of all the VZW phones, digital or analog. In some cases, we've seen it pull in digital signals no other tri-mode phone could find. That's one of the reasons why we tested for so much longer than the competition - we made sure it was as good as it could get before selling it.

However, you can't compaqre the CDM9900 with the Treo 600. They can both be used as phones, but neither is really like the other. The CDM9900 is a GREAT tri-mode cell phone. The Treo 600 is a GREAT PDA/digital phone. I'd buy the CDM9900 simply on price to quality ratio right now. I'd buy the Treo 600 simply because it's so damned cool.

Hi Epik,

Thank you for posting your insights. It sounds like I could use the Treo 600 in San Diego except when I go far out in the county.

I was disheartened to see the User Reviews of the Treo 600. Some people here don't seem happy with it.

Decisions, decisions...

Tom,

My mother-in-law uses Verizon (not the Treo, though) in San Diego, and gets great coverage even up in the hills. In the least, I'd get the Treo and try it like crazy within the 15-day return period. If it's not working out for you, return and cancel or get the 9900.

Epik,

Thanks again! I opted to get the 9900 for now and wait until the Treo 650 comes out.

Yes, I still get a digital signal in San Diego County as I go east on I-8. Once I pass the Laguna Mountains, I only get analog and sometimes no signal.

I'd go for the camera phone rather than wait for the TREO; the treo is designed to maintain a constant connection while waiting for incoming emils etc; Thus you must add a data package of 29.99 for 5mb or 49.99 for unlimited use. Otherwise you'll be billed airtime for all of the time your phone is connected (i.e. 24/7)

I don't need a constant link to email. It would be nice to have a PDA/cell phone combo anyway.

My understanding is that I can change the Treo's settings to only go on the web when I want it to. Then I could just use my plan minutes. Am I right about this?
