Phone for 10 yr. old

bajaed

Mar 6, 2007, 11:14 PM
I'm getting my son a phone for his birthday. He wants a razr style phone and I'm thinking about a v3m or krzr.

I want the parental chaperone feature, the ability to limit the numbers he can call and have a music player that I can control the content on.

I would also like to get a skin with his favorite team on it but I can't find any for the v3m on vskinz. Does that sound right?

Any opinions would be welcome.

Give him a nice phone, don't limit him, and pick the thing up once in a while to see who is on the recently dialed/received call list. Who knows, in a year he might be teaching you how to use your Blackberry 🤣

Getting a 10 year old a phone is crazy, much less getting him a specific type, I would get him a cheap, durable phone, he is going to loose it, break it, get it wet and its going to cost a fortune to replace.

A 10 year old dictating what kind of phone he gets, spoiled 🙄

Had one last week rippping me a new one when i told them replacement cost eventhough it was explained when she bought it and refused insurance. oh well...paid full retail for a replacement and got insurance this time 🤣

the razr is a chaperone parent phone, not really designed to be gven to kids so I am not sure if it would work the other way or not. The razr can been restricted in the security settings, you can set it to only accept calls from the phonebook as well as only make calls from the phonebook. Im order to put entries into the phonebook you will need to now the security code that comes standard as the last 4 of your cell phone# but can be changed to whatever you want to make it(just don't forget the code🙂) Hopefully that made sense. Now if you want a skin look to see if they have them for the v3c, The skins will be the same for both models so that might help. One more thing, get INSURANCE or some inda of protection. I personally would not give a ...

a non-prepaid cell phone for anyone under 16 i think is rediculous.I didn't get a phone till i was 16 and even then i did not use it that much...i would say 17 is a good age...w/ being able to drive, etc.

Everybody else seems to be caught up on giving a ten year old a phone. Who cares? If he wants to give his kid a phone, give him the advice he's asking for.

To answer your question...

I wouldn't get a RAZR or KRZR for a kid because they will break a little easier. If you want something durable that has all the same features, check out the LG VX8300. I had a customer (construction worker) drop it off the top of a ladder, and it barely scratched. If durability is not a concern, I would look at the LG VX8600. They have a lot less problems than the RAZR and KRZR (based on personal experience), and they have all the same features.

I don't know anything about skins, sorry. I would stay away from faceplates though because they will...

I think the razr is a good idea for a ten yr old because arnt the phones only $50? thats the price of a video game,a date, or gas if you have a suv. I say give the kid some quaters and teach him how to use the pay phone.

Okay, let me start by saying I'm not one of those parents who spoils their kid and gives them everything they want. We don't allow him to play violent video games, bad music etc.

He won't be carrying it everywhere. One of the main reasons I am getting this is for the chaperone feature that would allow us to know his location if he goes somewhere without us and the zone feature that would alert us if he leaves a chosen area. I also want him to be able to call us, selected friends and relatives, and 911 if he needs to.

Why the razr or krazr? He is a really good kid with a heart of gold and he likes to listen to music and play games in the car or between games in sports he participates in. I'm getting a free phone w/new every 2 plus 2 fre...

i don't believe the razr can be tracked via the chaperon...the krzr can. the 8300, 3450, chocolate, can also be tracked via chaperone.

While the 8300 is a great phone, it's a little ugly/boring, and a 10 year old is not going to care too much about its stellar recpetion. RAZRs and KRZRs are crap, but the 8600 is good. He also might like the Samsung a930 too. And you have a 15 day grace period so if he doesn't like the phone you pick out, he can return it and get one he likes.

I like both phones but I think the 8300 will be a more durable option. The 8600 is a nice flat phone but might be more "delicate" on the breakable scale. Just my opinion.

Just some suggestions if you really are serious about getting your 10 yr old a phone 🙂.

Request whatever features you don't want your child to be using to be blocked on the account. Don't assume that your child isn't going to use it or won't know how to use it. I used to handle escalations at the call center for the west area and I would speak to at least one parent each day who called up demanding that xxxx charge be removed because we failed to inform the parent that the child had access to download or use all these features on the phone. Generally it would be anywhere from $50 - $200, with the worst scenario being an 8 yr old kid "accidentally" downloaded over $1500 worth of GIN apps, premium text message charges, VCast music video...

Embrace the present and the future people. If people want to buy cell phones for their kids who cares. It puts money in my pocket which in turn may put money in your pocket because I am spending more money at your business per se.

Besides, the earlier we teach our kids about technology today the more likely they are to help us in the future. You just have to teach them responsibility. My parents instilled it in me and I turned out pretty damn responsible. All you have to do is be a parent and keep an eye out at all times. Take the phone away if they aren't being disciplined with it.

I’d recommend you go with the RAZR. I gave one to my youngest son for his birthday last year (March 14th, so he’s had it almost exactly one year). He’s very hard on phones! The thing looks like it’s been used as a street hockey puck, numerous deep scratches and the two outside plastic lens covers are cracked. But functionally, the phone works as well as the day we bought it, excellent reception and voice clarity.

As for those who knock the RAZR, I respectfully disagree. There seems to be a lot of unwarranted MOTO bashing on Phonescoop. With the exception of a few very low-end models, the Motorolas sold by Verizon in recent years IMO have been excellent.

As for the 8300, I am very familiar with that phone because my wife has one. It is ...
