I have a question, I'm new to phomescoop but maybe you can help me decide anyway.
I am at this time a verizon customer, and my one year contract expires on 1/05.
I am disappointed that everytime I go to our verizon store they have the same phones all of the time. Are the GSM carriers that far advance in their phone selection, that for every phone verizon comes out with, GSM carriers have three new ones?
I keep hearing how verizon does serious testing on their phones before they are released to the public. So are you telling me that the other carriers(GSM) don't test their phones?
Though I like verizon's coverage most of the GSM carriers "footprint" is almost just as large.
The appeal of having a removeable sims card is an exce...

All cell phone carriers test their products. VZW has always been slow to release. I don't know if it is because we test ours more heavily than others do. Also you have to remember you are talking 2 distinctly different technologies. What works for 1 doesn't always work for the other. Also take into account that at this time the mass market worldwide is mainly on GSM and you see where the bulk of the R&D money will be going.
At this time, you have to look at what the mass market wants. You will hear people scream about Bluetooth here and Infrared and how VZW doesn't have this or that, but when it comes down to the bottom line, right now not much of the mass market cares about those things. They care more about their call going through, whi...

um...HELLO??? Where the hell do you get your info? Cingular's network has been THE most reliable network while the hurricanes were blasting. 94% of Cingular's florida network was operational. the remaining 6% was off line because of no POWER. NOT because of a network failure. Everyday there is another article in the paper praising Cingular's network in florida right now.

That's great. You weatherd the storm, but lost service to something you could have prevented. But the fact is that very little of VZW' network was affected as well. We also have batteries about the size of a Honda near the majority of our sites so that power failure is not even an issue. Not to mention the "COW's" (Cellsite On Wheels) that we deploy at the hint of any network need. During 9/11 for instance. Most carriers had cell sites on the towers. We had our network up and running within 2 hours as opposed to 2 days to 2 weeks for other carriers. Remember the Suburban full of firefighters that were rescued from under the second tower. One used his VZW gps enabled handset to dial out and we provided authorities with their location ...

I get my info from multiple sources. News media, customers calling in, customers from other carriers calling in to port to us because their phones didn't work. I have taken numerous calls from people calling in to thank us because while their neighbors, friends, and family on other carriers, Cingular included, could not make calls because their services did not work. We aren't talking in areas like Ft. Lauderdale that had some storms that knocked out power while the biggest part of the storm passed by, but places like Punta Gorda and Port Charlette that were right smack in the middle of the hurricanes paths. That is where my information is coming from.
How about you?

Network reports,Live Network Data, Articles in the Local Floridian newspapers, Tech Ports on trouble spots. Just to name a few. The 6% of Cingular's network that was out was operational within hours of being knocked out due to no power. As far as porting Cingular customers over... We've ported a few VZW customers our way. Especially in the NE region. NYC in paticular comes to mind. VZW still has more customers than Cingular, but the true battle is about to begin.
