Spanish Billboards

USCELLGIRL

Apr 1, 2008, 12:54 PM
I am in Iowa and we have several billboards in spanish around town. We have a very large spanish speaking customer base so I didnt think anything of it when I started seeing them. Are other markets doing this as well?

The actual point of this thread is to ask if anyone has experienced customer complaints regarding these billboards? I have heard a couple. The first time I heard one I just looked at the lady in shock and awe ๐Ÿ˜ณ ...I couldn't believe it. I have since heard other complaints one was from a 10 year customer leaving us because of it. I felt like telling him his money was no more important than our spanish speaking customers. ๐Ÿ™„

Just curious if others have gotten any feedback from customers?

I haven't seen any billboards yet, but I'm sure I will. It irks me when I buy something and there is more Spanish on the packaging than English. I know the Spanish speaking market is large in certain areas, but not everywhere. English is our accepted language, we should keep it that way. When my great grandparents immigrated from Italy, they learned English. If I wanted to buy products with Spanish directions on them, I would move to Mexico or a country where Spanish is the accepted language. I wouldn't leave a carrier for their "Spanish" billboards. ๐Ÿ™‚

Your personal feelings and completely uneducated thoughts will be weighed when i pick a wireless carrier.

I DON'T WORK FOR USCC!!!! I couldn't care less what you think. Obviously, you are a minority without an education. Many US citizens feel the way I do. This is a free country AND English is the accepted language. If you have a problem with that, leave the country. By the way, WTF is a "Whitehores" anyway? Thank you for proving to me how ignorant you are. ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

I would not leave a carrier for it either. But it is getting old calling companies and then hearing press one for english. English needs to be the official language in the united states. I do not expect other contries to change their language for us if we go over there.

English is the language in the united states, if you come here, expect to learn it, read it, speak it, ect. And tax dollars should not be used for translaters in public schools. If we use any tax dollars, it should go for teaching the english language as that is what you should need to speak/read before coming here.

So, yes, several americans feel this way.

In america the economic system in place is capitalism.

Money has no color, money has no language. U.S. Cellular takes American Dollars like every other american company. We do not take brittish pounds, canadian dollars, or pesos. The skin color or the language of the person holding the money is of no consequence in a capitalist system.

If you want a country with an economic system based on racism good luck finding one. Money is color blind.

If you have some problem with seeing Spanish, then don't look at the billboards.

No one is making you read it, and no one is making you speak it. There are a lot of Spanish speaking people in the country and companies sell to them like they would anyone else.

Why does it make people so angry? It's not like a cell phone company is changing their official language to Spanish. We should be proud that, unlike some other countries, we have the compassion to help the immigrant population in any way we can.

Lets be honest here. helping the immigrant population is one thing, but we know most of the spanish translations is for illegals. And it is costing taxpayers money for this. In cellular industry, money is being spent on spanish billboards, ect, when it could be spent on improving the quality of the carrier, or lowering the price of plans, ect..that is why people are getting mad about it...it is costing money to the taxpayers.

If english was the official language, then we would not be here. That is like us going to germany, france, russia, mexico, wherever and expecting them to change to english since we moved there. Learn the language of the country that you are moving to. Now back to "press 1 for english" ๐Ÿ‘ฟ ๐Ÿ˜ก

No, we don't KNOW that. Maybe that's why everyone is getting mad about it though - because when they think of Spanish speaking immigrants, we automatically assume they're here illegally because of negative press. Secondly, you can't get cell phone service (at least in your name) if you don't have proper and complete identification.

Look, we are way off topic on this. The last thing I will say on this, since we could go on forever back and forth is on the deal you said the following..

Secondly, you can't get cell phone service (at least in your name) if you don't have proper and complete identification.

I think you can.

If there is a way, they, or I should say anybody can get it. Most likely prepaid would be the way to go with illegals, but that is phone service.

You normally can't get service without proper identification. If they don't have it, they get it. Usually by identity theft. See it all the time.

Why is it that when a Caucasian person (like myself) makes a claim against another race, that Caucasian person is instantly called a redneck???

Everyone is quick to criticize the 'white' man for being racist, but it is acceptable for the CURRENT minority (Hispanic and African American) to practice reverse racism on the 'white' man?

The fact is, everybody is correct. US Cellular is right for advertising in Spanish on billboards. They are a big company that is simply trying to generate more profit.

The people talking about how this is America and we need to speak English are also PARTIALLY correct. We would be ignorant to say that, when the first white settlers set foot in America, the natives were speaking English. Englis...

Wow, what a lovely racist comment. We aren't all "red-necks", but I guess you were too busy decrying the injustice of media spin to catch your own hypocrisy. I feel very passionate about the subject you guys are discussing. My grandmother immigrated to the United States during World War 2, from Germany no less, and had to endure being lumped into the same group as Nazis. She accepted it, the ignorant hate, irrational distrust. She also accepted that 1) She had to learn about the country she was immigrating to. 2) She had to learn the language that was widely used here. Sure it isn't America's official language, but it seems only fair that one should speak the same language that was used to compose the declaratory pillars that support ...

No, because the taxonomy of my reply was off you took it upon yourself to prove how much of a fool someone can be. You take the cake, really. The extent of your worth is just shy of mattering. You know, that point where you make yourself a hypocrite by pointing out errors in posting nomenclature, but you can't be bothered to entertain a discourse with someone because you have the attention span of a gnat.

The fact that I have yet to directly address someone by their forum "screen name" means I was more speaking in generalities. However, I did directly address the stereotype that people who oppose adapting to a minority are not r...

If this is a generalization you could have done well to, not only respond to the person who said the comment, but leave out the "you" and "your".

Your anecdotes are of no consequence to me and i have heard the sob story oh so many times, It's generic and i've seen it word for word on at least 300000 (not a hybperbole). i had left a general response to trucksmoveamerica already and i suppose if you had not bothered yourself to read it i was retro-actively deserved in not reading yours.

Sob story? Not likely.

Also, don't try to use large, difficult words if you can't structure a sentence properly. You are just like every other intellectual pretender. You, not unlike the OP, are trying ever so hard to make people believe you actually matter by puffing up your id with hot air. FAIL!

In fact, I don't see how any of your replies are conducive with an intelligent discourse concerning the original topic. No, you couldn't hold your own so you tried, and failed miserably, at trying to pick apart the vernacular structure of my reply.

I suppose a forum based around cellular phones is not the best place to stage a lengthy discussion about immigration reform, but I also suppose Whitehores doesn't often get the opportunity...

Don't worry about him. Tell-tale signs like "Fail" "FTL" and the crazy desire to signature his own posts shows he is a forum flame junkie. Ooops, too bad Phonescoop doesn't allow you to edit your post. When I originally made the mistake I thought it to be wasteful to post a reply to correct my mistake. I don't see how that negates the validity of any points that have been made. I also fail to see how "vernacular" is out of context.

If you saw difficult words in my post might i suggest seeking help.

The "OP" did not have an agenda and what she said was of no consequence to you. Your ad-hominem attack on me does not change that.

Example of why ad-hominem doesnt work:

"Your SN is Thales, we know this, there is no reason to put a signature at the bottom of every post which is something you type in every single time you post. It shows that you have an over-inflated sense of self worth and you would rather focus on your own self rather than anyone elses post.
