sorry if this is a stupid question, but a friend of mine and i were having an discussion, and i was hoping someone here could help..
i've read many people saying that they use their phones (while connected to their laptop) as their modem for their laptop.
my question is does the cell phone have to be on a wi-fi network, or can the EV-DO be used?
i said it was the EV-DO that does the trick, basically saying that you can be in the car on your laptop, and he was arguing that the phone can only be used if it itself is within a wi-fi network.

the ony phone that comes o mind that'll let you teather to evdo is the vx9800. there's a sevice plan you need to do it. most 1x phone'll teather, but at dialup speeds.

evdo phones can be used to teather to a lap top. just need cable. also verizonwireless has plans for using your phone in this way. also a few phones may have to hack a little to work. if you want more info check on howardforum.com you should be able to find out what you will need to do to use any phone.
