Flashing phones

Why can Verizon not just send a software update to my 8300 without me having to bring in my phone and dropping it off for however long while I wait or leave and come back in an hour? I just saw a post about version 4 of the software able to handle a 4gig memory card. Why with all the V-cast and live TV and downloading ringtones can I not get a prompt to update my software over the air like my computer when it gets software updates? It would sure save a lot of time for me. I know the technology must be there...so why not?

Last time I checked, you could update your firmware at home on your computer if you have a USB cable and drivers.

verizon will be releasing over the air firmware updates in the near future, but only for two phones...so its kind of pointless, but i applaud their effort

the Samsung u340 is set to launch September 7th and the Motorola SLVR L7c is still TBD...that's all I know at this point

There are also several others in the pipeline, so we'll see how it goes at this point. Personally I'd rather prefer them do this. I'm a tech, and listening to people cry and moan if their phone gets fried due to power outage or anything like that just isn't fun, especially when they know that there is that chance and that Verizon isn't responsible for any lost data or information.

yah i agree, from what i understand it's way quicker than in store flashing and if it get interrupted it just starts from where it left off...i don't understand why flashing can't be that easy

The u340 S/W flash came and went. We got an e-mail to stop doing them because they were causing more harm than good. 😕
Another reason not to do OTA flashes. You realize the cure is worse than the ailment.

The reason there is no over the air update to phones is because it would use alot of bandwidth and take forever. obviously if it takes 30 minutes to an hour to update via hardwire connection to machine it would take much longer over the air. over the air updates are available for other products and services but software is a totally different monster

What about @ 3am when I am asleep. Just leave my phone on and it can update at that time. Verizon can control when the update happens no?
...
yes, but only if you don't have a text block on, and only if the software update is deemed "critical" any other case it is user initiated
