What a timely announcement by ATTWS. Right before number portability. Very impressive. Now, the only majors in America w/o 3G are Cingular and T-Mobile.

Somehow that makes sense... 👿

Hey buddy just to let you know that what AT&T launches isn't even full 3G yet. It is still their 2.5G services. 3G will be when they launch UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunication Services) Which will allow for up to 3 times the speed of what they currently offer. And combine Data & Voices usage simultaneously. And it's a convenient launch because of Sprint's new campaign marking how their service is faster.

You sound like you know what you are talking about but what is the source of your claim that Edge is not true 3G? I'm not doubting you but I am looking for substantiating data please?

Thanks,
RaptorX

Sorry "buddy", but taken from AT&T's press release:

The launch of EDGE, which is a true "3G" technology as certified by the International Telecommunications Association,

I don't care if it's "full" or not, but it's 3G.

Edge is NOT actual 3G technology as stated before. It is a 2.5G tech, but, also stated before, UMTS is a full 3G tech. and i believe that I have read that ATTWS has been recieving help on implimenting such a service through the 1st in 3G service DoCoMo from Japan. Their 3G network is so advaced allows huge leaps over what EDGE can perform. Wait for that to come to the table and then say wow. I wish that DoCoMo was in the US just because there network is so badass. Anyways, if T-mobile, my carrier, doesnt get EDGE soon, i plan on switching over to ATTWS once my contract is up in January. Then i can get the sexy Nokia 6230 and use the EDGE service.

I think we're just playing semantics here. I agree that it's not "FULL 3G" and it's not "ACTUAL 3G", whatever the specs are on those technologies. In my opinion though, it's 3G. EDGE technology, properly implemented, can get you up to 384 kb/sec - and that is plenty fast to be qualified as a 3G service. Until someone comes out with the "FULL 3G" or "ACTUAL 3G" (read UMTS or CDMA2000), I'm going along with ATTWS and calling it 3G. And I'm sticking with "wow".

EDGE is not 3G as the previous poster explained-- it is 2.5. EDGE is an acronym for Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution. In other words, it's in between and not even close to true 3G speed and versatility as defined. 3G is different technology.

Of course, AT&T will play it up to sound like 3G and they get many people believing it.

I am an employee at AT&T Wireless although we may state it is 3G technology we know it isn't. It is mostly marketing that we do this for. The future of wireless is the UMTS which is true 3G technology. EDGE is an enhancement to the existing 2.5G network aka GSM/GPRS. When the true 3G technology is launched it will no longer be considered GSM/GPRS it is W-CDMA (UMTS)

My god, if you think this is 3G and you're saying 'wow', then you need to get with the times. I've had Sprint for over a year now with this '3G' service that you like to call it, and it's definately not 'WOW'. When 3G arrives, not 2.5G, then you can say 'WOW' without people laughing.

I was in no way meaning to be rude by what I was typing. I was simply just trying to educate based on my experience and training. I apologize if anyone was offended or feels I was rude in my replies.
