I was angry about this until...

I looked at my current data usage for the first week of my month. I've used ~40 Mb. I was shocked at how low it was as I play Words with Friends and High Noon constantly, stream ESPN Radio and Pandora a lot, and am constantly surfing the web on my iPhone. Then a bell went off in my head...I'm on Wi-Fi constantly. At home, work, and school I use Wi-Fi because I enjoy the faster speeds. This plan change just saved me at least $5 a month.

Now, I can see where some people don't have Wi-Fi access at work to stream stuff and I'm sorry, you're boned. I would say that the majority of people do though, and if you don't have Wi-Fi at home then you have other problems...

The tethering part is total BS though...

As an AT&T CSR, i've received quite a few calls about this today. The majorty of the calls are from irate customers who don't want the word "unlimited" taken away. As we review their accounts, and their usage history, the majority of them use nowhere near 1 gigabyte even. And quite a few will definitely be fine with the $15 plan for 200mb per month because they use their phones on wifi the majority of the time too. I honestly think it's only a small percentage of people who use more than 2gb per month. That small percentage is probably the majority of phonescoop though.

vee,
All over the world, mobile data is getting better and cheaper, be it unlimited or some cap which AT&T is putting forth is going against the grain. Yeah right now these new plans are fine for most of us, but not in the near future.

My iphone is well under 2gb, but at home it switches to my home wifi. There aren't enough AT&T hotspots by me outside of my home to make it worth it, even include Comcast's wifi which is free for their cablemodem users. (along with cablevision of which their is a wifi roam agreement) Besides I pay AT&T for 3g data, not other forms of broadband. And even when it is available like it Simon Malls, its so over taxed that your 3g is far faster and better.

Well according to the information that we've received internally, this is only for new subscribers. So if you already have an iphone, you have nothing to worry about. You can stay on your unlimited plan. We just no longer will offer it for NEW customers. Even when the next iPhone comes out, you can retain your unlimited plan. If you decide you don't want an iphone, and you upgrade to an Android, Blackberry or other smartphone, you still get to keep your $30 unlimited plan. However, if for any reason you decide to remove a smartphone plan, at that point you can not re-add the $30 unlimited. You'll have to choose one of the newer options.

veedubbmann, thanks for explaining this, most of the news feeds I read failed to mention this. You explained it good.

So now for all of those people who think it’s going to hurt them, they have nothing to worry about and can still upgrade if they choose to.
