AT&T today announced a restructuring of its wireless data plans. Starting June 7, new customers can choose either the DataPro or DataPlus plan. The DataPlus plan offers 200MB of data for $15 per month. According to AT&T, 65% of its data customers use less than 200MB. AT&T says 200MB is enough to send 1,000 emails with no attachments, or 150 with attachments, as well as view 400 web pages. For those who exceed the 200MB limit, there won't be overage charges. Instead, those customers can use up to another 200MB for an additional $15 per month. For heavier data users, the DataPro plan offers 2GB for $25 per month. AT&T says 98% of its customers use less than 2GB. Those who exceed 2GB in a month can opt for an additional 1GB of data for another $10. AT&T is also offering 1GB buckets for $10 each above and beyond the 2GB limit, so 3GB would cost $35, 4GB would cost $45, etc. Last, for an additional $20 per month, DataPro customers can choose the iPhone tethering option. This will allow iPhone customers to use their phone as a modem and use it to provide wireless data service to their laptop. The DataPro plus tethering option totals $45 per month. AT&T said it will soon be offering tools to help customers track their data usage, including text message alerts. As far as existing customers' options are concerned, AT&T spokesperson Seth Bloom explained, "Existing customers are not required to switch to the new plans, but can choose to do so without a contract extension. They are also not required to switch to the new plans if they renew their contract or switch to another smartphone. However, if they switch to one of the new plans, they will not be able to go back to their old unlimited plan." All plans include unlimited usage at AT&T's Wi-Fi hotspots.

THIS SHOULD BE 100% ILLEGAL !

IN 2010 THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR TIERED PRICING ON INTERNET, I REPEAT- NO EXCUSE PERIOD!

AT&T AND ANY OTHER COMPANY WHO CONDUCTS THIS DISGUSTING PRACTICE OF GREED SHOULD BE BOYCOTTED AND PUNISHED BY THE LAW FOR DEFRAUDING CONSUMERS. IT'S AMAZING HOW THE GOVERNMENT WILL STEP IN WHEN THEIR BEST INTERESTS ARE THREATENED BUT WHEN IT'S THE BEST INTERESTS OF THE PEOPLE, WHO GIVES A RAT DROPPING!? SO MAYBE I SHOULD PLAY THE TAX EVASION GAME AND WHEN I GET TAKEN TO COURT BY THE IRS AND THEY ASK ME WHY I DIDN'T PAY, I'LL SAY "WELL GEE I HAD USED A FEW EXTRA GIG'S THIS MONTH AND MY WIRELESS CARRIER WAS ABOUT TO SUSPEND MY SERVICE, WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO? NOT FULFIL MY CONTRACTUAL OBLIGATION?" FAN BOYS OF GREED PLEASE MOVE ON AS YOUR COMMENTS...

Explain how they're defrauding customers please.

Also the modern day slavery remark in regards to cell phone data plans is just plain funny. It's hard to tell if you're serious or if you're doing a parody of a customer.

I almost read this...I'd like to request a non-all-caps version and maybe it'll be readable.
So go with another carrier! Wow, thats sooo hard!

Please don't get the government involved. If you do not agree with tiered pricing then don't sign up with AT&T. I know I'm not. Every time I am about to pull the trigger they go and do something dumb like this.

So I could have 15$ data on the IPHONE?

assuming I don 't go over 200MB? That's friggin sweet deal if 65% of users don't go over that amount already.

I was angry about this until...

I looked at my current data usage for the first week of my month. I've used ~40 Mb. I was shocked at how low it was as I play Words with Friends and High Noon constantly, stream ESPN Radio and Pandora a lot, and am constantly surfing the web on my iPhone. Then a bell went off in my head...I'm on Wi-Fi constantly. At home, work, and school I use Wi-Fi because I enjoy the faster speeds. This plan change just saved me at least $5 a month.

Now, I can see where some people don't have Wi-Fi access at work to stream stuff and I'm sorry, you're boned. I would say that the majority of people do though, and if you don't have Wi-Fi at home then you have other problems...

The tethering part is total BS though...
As an AT&T CSR, i've received quite a few calls about this today. The majorty of the calls are from irate customers who don't want the word "unlimited" taken away. As we review their accounts, and their usage history, the majority of them use nowher...

Knowledge is power

Folks, I AM NOT the original author of this post which mainly references to cable internet. However I ask that everyone bear an open mind and read it thoroughly. I was scouring the internet to convey my thoughts and feelings about this matter to this site as clearly as possible and this is the best I have found which IMHO holds true to wireless as well.

"Its refreshing to see, at last, an article about capping and overcharging which doesn’t start with the phrase “As we move forward toward a fair form of consumption-based charging…”, etc.

There IS NO fair form of consumption-based charging for bandwidth! Unlike processed water, gas, and electricity, bandwidth is not generated by backbone providers or ISPs, nor

Ha Ha Glad I'm me

Glad I'm just a lame dumb phone user. I don't walk around with my phone listening to music, watching TV, downloading a bunch a crap that in no way increases the quality of life. How lame right? I go outside and interact with people face to face!

Wait until 4G...

5GB will be used in a flash. They'll have their 4G data plans at $55+/month for the iPhone junkies, for sure.

PDA Net People

Use PDA Net for tethering on your Iphone, your Blackberry or your Droid. Seriously, its $29 cost FOREVER and thats after a 30 day trial. Works great and no one, including Verizon can see that your back door tethering on the unlimited $29.99 data plan.

Any blah blah blah "violates terms of service" blah blah blah need not be posted, thanks in advance. Its been around a long time now and no one has had problems with bills.

Merry Christmas.
I think that's the whole point of the data restructuring. You can't "beat the system" if you have metered GB allowances. Your PDAnet will save you the $20 monthly tethering surcharge, but the data consumed will still be metered at the $10/GB rate! ...

I Don't Trust AT&T's Numbers.

This is going to add up really, REALLY quick for users. 200mb is nothing, 2gb is nothing. I question the validity of the numbers of usage by subs posted by AT&T. My rant is irrelevant as I left their neighborhood years ago. But it also confirms my decision to never return.

JB.
It's actually fairly true. I don't use data all that much as far as usage, but I've never cleared over 15 KB of usage on a regular device. My dad has an iPhone he uses ALL the time and rarely clears 150k KB of usage a month.

I agree, 2GB's is nothing, 5GB's is also nothing, But then it all depends on the user.

You have to be a headdbanging idiot.

One has to be a head banging idiot to sign with AT&T after June 7th. They have no excuse for this anal insertion other then pure greed. Heck with them. I am really thinking about porting out and going to Sprint or VZW. They can go strait to hell.

If one wants gsm, I think they should goto TMO, heck might even be an option for myself.

did you hear Verizon's announcement

They are keeping unlimited data, contrary to what they have been saying.

*Breaking News* At&t says "Just kidding, we are keeping unlimited data too."

Who wants to bet on how long til VZW announces it is going tiered? I've got $10 on by 2 p.m. today June 2, 2010
VZW announce it will be tiered on LTE. 3G will pretty much stay the same since AT&T is the one who always copy VZW.

Dan Heese must be just beaming right now

While AT&T is freaking out about bandwith, cutting away from unlimited data, and pretending like it's an effort to save customers money (which is why they've always been one of the more expensive options, right?), Sprint can simply come out and say "Come get an EVO. It's not limited, and it's faster." And even with the reduced prices, assuming no overages, they're still a better value:

AT&T iPhone:
Minimum: $55 (450 mins, 200MB)
Average: $75 (450 mins, unlimited text, 200MB)
Max: $115 (unlimited mins, unlimited text, 2GB)

Sprint EVO:
Minimum: $80 (450 mins, unlimited text/data)
Average: $80 (see above)
Max: $110 (unlimited everything)

So, ignoring the phones, since I don't want this to turn into an iPhone vs Android thread, wh...

Are they @!#king nuts?

First off, is this April Fools? The pricing of this makes so little sense I don't know even know where to begin, but I'm gonna try.

200MB? For $15.00? - First off, I don't even know who uses 200MB on their iPhone, and if they do, they're using it wrong. 200MB wouldn't even cover a month of application updates for the average iPhone user.

I don't believe that for a minute. Even when I spent a lot of time in an area with a very very very weak AT&T EDGE signal I hit 700MB/month.

And Why is this more expensive than the iPad? Seriously, that's just stupid- iPad users aren't even signing up for a service plan. At least give iPhone users a break for the ball-and-chain.

2GB? - I hit between 3 and 5 easily ever...

We may not agree on some things. However, we need to agree that this is AT&T's MO. It is easier to quell data usage rather than work to bring their network to legitimate operating conditions.

LOLOL @ AT&T

Well, if they don't want to spend money on their network. Just introduce caps and milk their customers so their network doesn't get hammered.

Now is left to see what VZW LTE caps will be.
I have to agree. I'm so glad I ditched At&t in 2004.
Did you miss the whole article a few months back where AT&T had invested $19 Billion into the network?

And as far as this goes, I think it's a great change. I don't use a ton of data every month and it'll be nice to actually pay for what I use vers...

Existing Customer Feature Phone

This says for "new customers" so If I have medianet unlimited for $15/mo, I should be fine right? I have the Mythic and use more than this amount of data!
Yeah, you'll be able to keep your existing package. That's what "Existing customers can keep their current data plans." means. =P
