They don't give a crap about the customers future data use when they are already screwing them with 10 dollar 25MB data!

Actually, the mandatory data plans on some phones wasn't solely to increase the bottom dollar, although that's certainly a short-term benefit.

The future of wireless is data. It's far more efficient and cheaper than voice. By requiring data plans on select phones aside from smartphones, this acclimates customers to paying for data, and slowly over time you'll see voice plans begin to disappear as even the wireless companies migrate traditional voice to VoIP or some variant thereof.

It's already happening, too. Vonage and MagicJack come to mind, and even Comcast and Verizon Communications offer some sort of digital voice service in lieu of traditional wireline services. They may not be wireless carriers, but it's only a matter of time b...

Efficient huh??? Well guess what, the father of the cell phone, Martin Cooper said that the spectrum needs to be used more efficiently

The solution to deteriorating mobile telephone service is NOT more spectrum; it's using existing spectrum efficiently!

I'm just calling it how I see it. I may be proven wrong, but everything going on is pointing to data. Sooner or later, likely years down the road, we'll all be paying for some sort of data and voice plans will be part of the past.

Your right. Wireless companies are already looking into voice over LTE as an option. I've read such headlines here on PS.

I don't agree. People are using their Cell phones for wireless voice more than ever. My girlfriend and I do not have a land line. My mom does not have a land line. NONE of my friends have a land line. We all need to talk via voice, and its not over land line. Voice communication will not die out. trust me.

No, voice communication won't die out, just how it's routed that's all. Eventually voice will be routed as data.

And btw, you can count me in on the no land line also. I haven't had a land line in over 8yrs+.

They've committed to 1x for ten more years. I'll either stay with them or move to someone else who offers voice.

No, voice communication will absolutely not die out. The way it's carried across the network will change, though (essentially what Jayshmay said right above).

Voice plans becoming part of the past is already happening, folks:

* VZW trimmed their consumer voice plan offerings down to 3 tiers: 450, 900, and unlimited minutes. AT&T followed suit the exact same day and started offering the exact same plans at the same prices.

* T-Mobile now has 3 tiers of consumer voice plans: 500, 1000, and unlimited. The pricing is a little cheaper than the aforementioned, true, but that's in T-Mobile's nature.

* Sprint offers 3 tiers of consumer voice plans: 450, 900, and unlimited. They also have a 200 minute plan listed for light users.
