Verizon's First LTE Handset Coming Mid-2011

In a recent interview, Verizon Wireless' chief technology officer, Tony Malone, indicated that the company will have a Long Term Evolution handset ready for the market by the middle of 2011. That's about six months sooner than Verizon had expected. Malone noted that the device won't be straight LTE only, but rather will combine CDMA and LTE chipsets and their inherent capabilities. Verizon Wireless plans to have LTE available in 25 to 30 markets later this year, covering about 100 million pops. Malone also made comments about the future of unlimited data plans. "As much data as you can consume is the big issue that has to change," he said. "It's one thing to say all you can eat is gone. It's another to have consumers worrying, 'Can I stream this radio?' That's what we don't want." AT&T's CEO has made similar comments in recent weeks.

What a crock!

They don't give a crap about the customers future data use when they are already screwing them with 10 dollar 25MB data!
Actually, the mandatory data plans on some phones wasn't solely to increase the bottom dollar, although that's certainly a short-term benefit.

The future of wireless is data. It's far more efficient and cheaper than voice. By requiring data plans o...

Sprint FTW

Enough said 😁
Actually I *might* consider Sprint if this HTC Supersonic ends up being everything I hear it is.

Question for you about Sprint. I'm currently w/ATT, only carrier I've ever been with, and with ATT I have the freedom to change my account ANYtime w/o ...

Smart move...?

I don't know how I feel about this one. I want my internet to stay unlimited, both at home and on my phone. But I am not naive to think companies can continue to deliver that. I know it is quite expensive on the 3G wireless side of things. I also know that LTE makes that data transfer not only faster, but less expensive. Still, I wonder if we will look back on these times as the good ol' days when we could download however much we wanted (kind of like the good ol' days of Napster).

I am a pretty heavy data user on my iPhone. But I am mostly around wifi. So although I transfer an absolute ton of data, the amount I do over the wireless network is about 200MB at the most. I wonder if Verizon (and AT&T for that matter) will only try to limit ...

They want to limit the strain on their network. I rarely use wifi (most hotspots up here arn't free) so I go about 1.2gigs on my Droid. I don't think they care about that usage level.

But when most use 50b and then you have users using 500gb+ (la...

I'll second that. Love my EV-DO one.

What's the point?

I cannot find the logic in marketing a faster data network and beefing it up to ensure everyone can have it blazing fast whenever they want it and then saying in the next breath that you have to limit your use or pay dearly. Think about it...by charging a premium for heavy usage aren't you implying that you can supply it but it will cost you? If it is seriously going to impair other customers than the customers who aren't heavy users should be able to demand compensation for bad service. In light of my last statement I'm certain wireless providers are planning to able to handle the 'load' they anticipate with the direction wireless consumption is inevitably going. Look what's going with broadband cable. I remember when it first rolled out he...

When cable companies first launched the internet was also VERY different. If you look at modern companies like road runner, comcast, etc now are all considering getting rid of the "all you can consume" packages.

The problem isn't the user who watc...

Vzn doesn't like people streaming radio?!!!!!?

What's the point in even having LTE if people can't USE it?!!!!? That is exactly what LTE is for!!! Multimedia! Hulu, streaming radio, porn.
