Did it occur to anyone that perhaps RIM was the reason there has not been a 3G blackberry with wifi until the Bold? maybe RIM has been the issue.

ALL 3G is CDMA, just to stop folks from making this a CDMA vs GSM discussion.

That is a true statement, however, it must be noted that CDMA2000 EV-DO is not the same as UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA/HSPA+. It's truly the mannerisms of the technologies that cause it, not the technology itself. (The CDMA Verizon/Sprint use could easily use R-UIM cards which are basically a CDMA2000 version of SIM cards.)

I do think it's great to be adding features that are good for consumers. A big advantage of wi-fi for me is that I can connect to my wireless network at home to access data/media without having to pay for a huge data plan I don't really need. I just pop my SIM into my Blackberry 832...

Does that mean that if I have he 450 minute plan and I'm using the 'data' access over 450 minutes I don't have to pay more?

No. Having wi-fi provdes an alternative, no minutes-used, method for accessing web services.

If you have a 450 minute plan with a regular phone then you get a blackberry, you must pay more for a data plan

To add to this, if he is using minutes to pay for data, he'll have to switch to a nationwide plan to gain access to these new phones, which will mean he can't use minutes to pay for data anyway.

Using minutes to count data was a dumb idea anyway. If you have to browse the mobile web to read a news story, you have to read very quickly if you aren't doing it on a night or weekend. That and while counting minutes you are on the web, many minutes are spent not doing any data transfers, therefore being wasteful, hence the per-MB rate or unlimited data. No more minutes to fuss over.
