Sprint Nextel recently revealed that it plans to add Wi-Fi to the BlackBerry Tour starting in 2010, and will begin to require that all its future smartphones come with Wi-Fi. Sprint didn't say exactly when this requirement will be reflected across its entire line-up of devices, but Wi-Fi is definitely on the way. Verizon Wireless also admitted that it will begin adding Wi-Fi to its BlackBerry line-up in the future, but it didn't reveal a timeframe. Wi-Fi is absent on devices such as the current 9630 Tour and 9530 Storm.

Will the Storm One get Wi-fi?

Was wondering if the Original Storm will be added Wi-fi?????? Thank you, Steven in SoCal
That's just as immpossible as them adding a camera to your phone. It's a hardware issue/update.
No they won't, unless they come out with some clunky attachment. (which I doubt)

The Storm 2 and Aries will have WiFi on them. These are the next BlackBerrys to be out on Verizon.

Eh? Cost and size...

Is it small enough and cheap enough to keep the size and cost of the device down?

To me every millimeter of internal space should be used for something necessary, and unfortunately WiFi is just unnecessary. Replace that chip with say, more memory and I'll be happy 🙂
For most phones I dont think the size difference will be that bad. For the global phones, there might be a slight increase, but they are the ones who could use it most (skype+wifi=free international calling) so those customers shouldn't mind that muc...

i guess i dont get it i why do i need wifi

I guess i dont get it guys i have a pda with sprint that has wifi but I dont think I have ever used it I get 3g almost anywhere. and with 4g coming that will be way faster than wifi so why do I need this ?
You really don't. This is more Verizon and Sprint caving to customer demands for a technology that neither one finds important.

Now, sprint might be pushing more wifi hotspots once they do this (I don't see verizon doing itm since they are going t...

Just because 1 customer doesnt need wifi, it doesnt mean that another one doesnt need it.

When you are out of your network area, or in another country and are within reange of wifi, its very convenient.
My friends office has terrible service, but ...

I really, really hate carriers making handset decisions! ! !

One of the many reasons I like UNlocked/UNbranded handsets.

Hardware is Nokia's job,
Service is AT&T's job.

Precisely the way it should be!
Carriers really, really need to bud out of the hardware side of things! ! !
I'm really, really trying to figure out how requiring wifi on smartphones is a bad thing.

Its not that I disagree with you. But when it comes to carriers and manufacturers one is always going to influence the other. If all the carriers had insisted on wifi for smartphones/pda since the technology first came about for mobile phones. Then th...

Adding Wi-Fi?

I don't know the technology behind this, but if Verizon adds Wi-Fi in the future is that a software upgrade to the current Tour or must I get a new edition of the Tour?
Wifi is not a software, it is the actual hardware. If verizon adds wifi, it will be to new versions of the device.

Verizon's not like Apple was with the iTouch, where wifi was present but they had it locked. The hardware would have to be updated....

What's the Point?????

I haven't found a spot yet where my data plan didn't work, and I've even landed in the sticks in Arkansas. I wasn't able to make calls, but by God I could check my email, run all my aps, etc... And based on that, If I land a spot where my data coverage doesn't work, I highly doubt they'll have WiFi either...

So, why be restricted within the boundaries of WiFi, when I have mostly all over coverage through the data plan I'm required to have to use my device anyways??

Because people are convinced they need wifi.

Yes, there are a few reasons (algorithmplus's post) that wifi would help a customer, but it's not needed.

And yet customers will switch carriers to get a phone with the feature, even if it's not neede...

Did it occur to anyone

Did it occur to anyone that perhaps RIM was the reason there has not been a 3G blackberry with wifi until the Bold? maybe RIM has been the issue.

ALL 3G is CDMA, just to stop folks from making this a CDMA vs GSM discussion.

That is a true statement, however, it must be noted that CDMA2000 EV-DO is not the same as UMTS/HSDPA/HSU...

Great news!

While I'm sad the Tour 9630 does not have WI-FI right now, this is good news. The CDMA Blackberries need to catch up to the rest of the GSM carriers. I'm all for Blackberry fairness on all networks! Keep up the good work Verizon and Sprint. Now if only pictures of the Blackberry Magnum would surface....
The "Storm 2" as it is called right now has been rumored to have wifi.

Very good news 😁

I can't get over how much the phone/carriers cater to the wifi/Starbucks crowd. Wifi is horrendous I much prefer the consistency of the CDMA data connection - without the SSID, passwords, nickel and dime wifi operators trying to grab my $9.95 for one...
