Did someone fail economics 101?

Oh yes, i will spend a few billion on this 25MHz sliver of a license, and give out free service.

There are many ways to gain revenue from services. Advertising is one.

(Conversation from 1996)- I think I read a story about some no-name company who gives pretty much everything for free to consumers and charges companies for advertising. It's a small start-up out of Mountain View, California I think the name is "Google". Oh well, it'll never work.

Ad driven internet services have long shown to be loss leaders. Google is/was a phenomenon. As a general rule, those companies that try to repeat that experience fail.

Well it would be millions of daily users. I don't know if it would fly though. Completely free broadband service? One of the biggest sources of activations for me at Verizon is the PC cards, and I'm sure the same holds true for other carriers. I just don't see any existing carrier willing to jump in on giving away for free what they're currently charging upwards of $60 a month for. I also don't know if a company that's not in the cell phone business would have the money to build a nationwide network to provide free in...

You must think outside the box.....
Imagine- you have a mobile device connected to the Internet/GPS service and you need a restaurant in a city you don't know. Type it into your device and BAM! Their listed in order of advertisement $ and location.

It could work.

I think Google knew this was coming so they pulled out of the 700MHz for a reason.

Side question-
Are VZW's PC Cards still capped at 5 Gigs?

Yes and no. There is no cap so to say, but there is a 5 GB allowance and once you go over, you pay overage. ATT and Sprint have the cap in some respect too, not sure about Tmob or Alltel, but it wouldn't surprise me to see them add it too within the next few months to year.

I know it sounds like I'm totally schilling for Verizon, but 5 GB allows you about 34,000 web page views or over a million emails. I don't think Verizon or most other wireless carriers really wants to be the ISP for everybody playing World of Warcraft.

Alltel and Sprint are both unlimited and I don't believe they will ever cap them.

The cap would not be a problem for most everybody. We sell a ton of Alltel Data cards. In this area there is not VZW EVDO only Alltel's. They are a big hit here. Our number one competetion is satellite Internet. So for the people that use our cards for their primary source of Internet, I would be concerned for the cap.....

I am not sure....has anybody ever hit the cap?

the caps were originally intended for people who download movies and play internet games or use Share Bear (your always connected to the internet) those are the only people that really suffer from the data cap's that the carriers have installed...

You did not answer my question.

Plus... if I am going to pay $60 for Internet, 98% of the time it will be my primary source. How in the world is somebody going to tell me what I can and cannot do with my $60 Internet? Play games, download movies or Share Bear......should it matter?

When you say carriers, how else besides VZW has a cap?

And again, has anybody ever seen somebody go over the cap?

Actually Sprint will be capping their internet to 5gb a month on network and 300mb off-network. Go over either one and they will be charging overages. It hasn't been finalized yet, but Sprint will in fact be capping it, like Verizon & AT&T will. I don't know how this will affect Alltel user...

AT&T doesn't charge for overages, more of a slap on the wrist and a warning that if you keep it up, they'll shut you off.

I don't even think they warn unless you do it 2 or 3 months in a row.

The figure given to me for Verizon was about 6% of their users go over the cap. That sounds small, but I bet if you looked at internal projections, it was considerably higher than anticipated.
